I have to buy a new iron and I am considering a steam generator iron. Has anyone got one and are they any better than a normal steam iron. Are they worth their high price tags?
I had one for many years and served me well.
In answer to your question I think that mine was much hotter and ironed better than the current 'normal' iron I have now. But... They are cumbersome to store and found it a bit of a pain that if I ran out of water I had to wait for it to cool down a bit before I could put more water in it. I have 6 kids so had a lot of ironing to do in those days, so when it had seen better days decided on a smaller iron but in two minds to go back to a steam generator. (They vary in price too, so think you get what you pay for)
I've had one for about 7 years now. I am on my second Philips Iron, not only does it half the time of ironing it also has a heat sensor so I don't have to adjust anything, I just fill it up and iron. I do know of others who have bought cheaper irons and said that they don't feel that it cuts down the ironing time, but mine definitely does.
The only negative with them is that if you don't keep up the descaling it will hiss a load of brown scale over your shirt but maintain it well and you won't go wrong. I do 2-3 baskets of ironing a week so its invaluable to me no way would I go back to a standard iron now.
Daughter joined the RAF and started with a standard steam iron, could never achieve the high standards of ironing required and was advised to buy a steam generator iron. Never looked back and well worth the extra money.
If you buy a Polti brand you do not have to wait for it to cool to refill with water.
I'm on my second Tefal steam generator iron - I hate ironing and only iron what's essential, but I wouldn't go back to a 'normal' iron. Mine has a removable water tank, so it's really easy to fill with water, and you don't have to wait for it to cool down to re-fill it.

Or don't bother ironing......
If you wash clothes on the correct setting and at the correct temp, then hang them up carefully, you shouldn't need to iron much.
If it needs ironing I don't buy it!

Well I have bought a Tefal steam generator and tried it out today. Am very pleased with it so far. It is quicker and better than a normal iron and does not take up too much space. Easy to use too.
