Advice needed here folks. After killing myself manual pumping the car tyres up, I decided to get one that is electric. However, on looking for one, they all seem to need plugging into the cigarette lighter socket, but mine does not work. What is the altenative- but not a fortune. Many thanks.
Firstly sound like the fuse has been blown on the circuit for your lighter socket.
Usually 10amp fuse, but most modern cars are now fitted with 20am, check your car manual.
If you buy a compressor that sucks more than your lighter socket can cope with ie 10amp or 20amp, then you will need to connect directly to the car battery, you can of course buy an electric compressor that has a built in battery, but that will be expensive.
Ring do some good compressors, forget the one with lights and digital display, just go for a basic model.
I can highly recommend the Ring RAC700 although it does draw around 14amps.

Thanks for that advice, but it got bunged up with a sweet ( dont ask lol)some time back and I am unable to get it cleared.
It is usually relatively easy to replace the socket with a new one.
Alternatively, don't let your car tyres deflate to such an extent that pumping them up again kills you
I have had a twin barrel foot pump for years...probably came from Halfords. I recently bought a digital pressure gauge just to check that the analogue gauge on the pump was still accurate, and surprisingly it was...or at least, they both read the same so I assumed they were accurate.
On the occasions that the tyres are down by a pound or so a couple of quick pumps and they are back to pressure again. I had also considered an electric pump but thought that plugging a wire in and out as I went to each tyre was too much hassle.
I do a lot of marshalling on car rallies and am an event first aider so end up doing fair amount of rough tracks, etc. I can still, just about, manage a foot pump but have a compressor that works on the cig lighter but I can also charge by a basic 13 amp socket. Apart from the occasion I had tyre ripped to shreds, it got me back down to civilisation on stored power.

I generally use my pump connected to the cigarette lighter socket in the centre console but there is also one in the boot which is quite handy.
I also have a Bicycle Track pump which I sometimes use if I can't be bothered hooking up the 12v one.
It is also very good and although its a manual pump, its very easy to use and has the capacity to pump up to 160psi. It has a dual head with both Schrader and Presta valve fitting. Schrader being the car/caravan,cycle fitting.
Have a look online,I find it a useful tool to have.

If you have VW, it can often be the case that when the key is out of the ignition, there is no power to the auxiliary 12v sockets on the car.
This was easily rectified on the firms VW Mk7 Golf 1.6TDi BlueMotion that I drive, by moving the 20amp fuse to the next slot, so now the 12v sockets are working all the time, which is quite handy as I have a portable fridge running in the car 24/7.
I think a pump of any kind is really required if you are a caravanner, trailer tent owner etc.
Not only to check caravan tyre pressures but also when towing I like to put a bit extra in the car tyres as recommended.
You then have to put back down to normal tyre pressure when not towing.
