Heard about an outbreak of babesiosis in the UK on the BBC news on the way home tonight. Apparently it's spread by ticks like Lyme disease and has killed a dog in Essex.

Is this the same illness that affects some dogs that visit the Sandringham estate? There are warnings posted up on both the CC and the C&CC sites there as well as other notice boards around the estate and on the respective websites as part of the booking process.
Aparently this is carried around the area by infected fleas that live on the Deer population in the area.

You need to use a tick potion that deters them from latching on and if they do that kills them within 24 hours to minimise the risk.

And the ticks seem to be swinging into full force early this year; picked up one in the Lakes last w/end and found two on the dog on Tuesday.

Babesiosis is another name for piroplasmosis and that has been around in Europe for a long time. We lived in France for some years and when we took our newly adopted dog to the vet for a once-over check-up a blood test showed that he had piroplamosis, luckily very early stages. The vet gave him an injection for it and everything was fine then, but it can be fatal within a couple of weeks if left untreated.
The good news is that the standard tick treatment of Frontline/Advantix does seem to work. We have always treated our dog monthly with one or the other, and despite regularly finding ticks on him when we were in France (and removing them) the problem did not recur.

I do wonder though how much allowing pet passports has to do with parasite born diseases arriving in the UK that we haven't seen before.
