My grandmother (born 1895) told me it passed down the female line, but I thought that was just to give her (ex) husband a poke in the eye

Problem solved
for some reason half the family is called "Brown Love " and some Just "Love"
yet they had the same mum and dad
I will get to the bottom of this new issue one day but for the time being a very dark room is called for.   :)
Thanks everyone

First I've ever heard of that. Strangely enough all those clan chiefs are wearing their dad's tartans, not their mum's.

In fact I've never met anyone who wears their mother's tartan. They all wear their clan tartan according to their surname.
Where did you get this notion regarding tartans from?

Em history actually.

Clans of old married within the clan. But then you didn't know that. Not to worry, should gave asked your gran and great gran. My great grandfather Rutherford even told me. BTW I don't wear a clash tartan shall I get rid of my kilt lol.

Actually, being a graduate of Scottish history, I was intrigued by this and did a bit of research.
This notion does exist and the earliest mention of it was the 19th century. This was round about the time that tartan mania was hitting Britain. Exactly the time that clan tartan setts were being created. It seems to be a Victorian construct.
Basically wear whatever tartan you want. Clan tartans came into being after the clan system ceased to exist anyway.

English Mum, Scottish Dad so we have the (lowland) Fraser clan tartan. Son has the hunting Fraser kilt but doesn't like the dress Fraser colours so is getting the newer modern red dress Fraser for those occasions when required.

Mackenzie tartan. Ancient, dress or whatever is various shades of green. So there's no red in it! I hope you find out eventually

My husband is English. Not a drop of Scottish blood. But the tartan you wear just shows your allegiance, no more & no less - hence the various football clubs have a tartan (Rangers is a particularly bright blue), there's a Sikh tartan, various regimental tartans, a black & white shepherd's tartan in the Borders and we can all wear Royal Stuart. We live in Ayrshire, OH has lived here longer than he ever lived in England, and there are many so-called District tartans, so OH wears the Cunninghame tartan (the old name for this part of the country). When Prince Charles visits locally, he comes as the Earl of Kyle & Carrick and wears that district tartan. There are over 2000 tartans now, including one designed for the film "Braveheart" which uses the old muted colours. You don't have to wear a Clan tartan.
