Looks as if parts of M5 Southbound are about to have signs showing fuel prices.
Not clear from this article whether they will show prices at the next two (at least) service areas, but hardly "innovative" - I'm sure there have been similar schemes in operation elsewhere twenty-odd years ago, and you might still be able to spot (in the UK) the p signs in the bottom right of some older services approach signs, left over from the days when the next service's prices used to be displayed (think they gave up when prices went over £1 a litre, or possibly a gallon! )
The idea is that motorway services might try to compete with each other on price but anybody who is actually bothered about services fuel prices will just continue to plan their fuel & food stops around the supermarkets just off motorway exits.
For those northbound on M74, there's a Tesco's filling station opposite the slip road at Lesmahagow. Does not apply southbound.
I only use it to add sufficient fuel if I'm not convinced I'll have enough fuel to get to Dumbarton and the Esso as the percentage of bio-diesel is too high for my engine (one reason I don't use Tesco fuel) but shouldn't worry most of you.

Southbound M74 exit junction 9 turn right at end of slip road in about a mile you turn right at roundabout cross bridge over M74 to Tesco.
On way out cross back over bridge take roundabout to Southbound slip road.
Very simple & cheaper fuel than services.
This is not a huge Tesco & car park iis never full so you should be able to park even with caravan attached if you need some supplies.
Just come back up M5, most prices for diesel £116.9 and 115.9 for petrol that was all services on both ways, so one sign with price would do as they are all the same.
This is a trial apparently to run southbound between Bristol and Exeter. It is pretty unclear what will be on the signs but every impression that I have seen resembles the image in this article. This image very much resembles the signs on French autoroutes though, so whether it is actually what we will get or has just lifted from somewhere where these signs already exists remains to be seen.
Seems pretty sensible to me but will rely on the company running the services to have appropriate technology and I note that Cullompton services is not mentioned as being included in the trial! In fact, Tiverton services at junction 27 is also not included ... although are these counted as 'motorway services' as they are just adjacent to a junction. I bet the operators would like to think they are! TBH if it is a question of 'some are and some aren't' then you have to question the validity ... but hey it's only a trial at this stage.
It has always been the case that by leaving the motorway (or European equivalent) and seeking a supermarket, you will find cheaper fuel. That's nothing to do with this trial though.
