If average scooter is £1000 in in Oz then it's no different to UK. As pointed out, one needs to shop around. Prices for the same model can vary quite sharply. It's only ripoff Britain if you allow yourself to get ripped off.
I think its fair to say that a number of older people who maybe live on their own and do not have close family to help them out, are vulnerable to getting ripped off.
Disability is a minefield with a reputation for overcharging and I do agree with Jeff.
Mention the disability word and the cost goes up.
There have been a few documentaries showing how folks get ripped off in relation to aids for a disability.
There have also been a posts saying the same on this subject many times..
I have came across this dishonesty myself but fortunately I still have my wits about me and told them where to go!
Not every dealer/seller is dishonest or will take advantage but they are out there.
------------- It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
My OH has a Wispa scooter which is small and compact and only weighs 32kg complete. It fits easily in the car or motorhome. We also take it on the plane when we go on holiday abroad.
The other thing to bear in mind with scooters is that some of the so called luxury models are extremely heavy, which is a real pain when trying to load/unload the thing into the back of the car. Some of the cheaper/lightweight 4 wheelers are often a better option.
bought one for my dad off ebay (someone selling it locally, whose elderly relative had died). It had hardly been used and only needed new batteries after about 2 years of useage. Absolute bargain at £120 and practically untouched. Dad used it for about 4 years before he died and now it's sitting in my garage, battery charged, and is still working well.
There were lots of them for sale second hand when we bought ours for dad...obviously lots of people buy them and then unfortunately pop off before using them for long. secondhand prices are tiny compared to the prices brand new.
