HI I AM OFF TO FRANCE NEXT WEEK,I AM INTERESTED TO KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET A MORE FAVOURABLE CURRENCY DEAL IN FRANCE THAN IT IS HERE AT THE MOMENT 1.19 EUROS TO THE POUND ANY ADVICE RE HIS MOST APPRECIATED.
Too late for next week - but you need to get a cheap to use card at the ATMs. e.g. Halifax Clarity credit card - lots of threads on here on the subject if you search or go to the Martin Lewis website.
We take the debit card with the minimum bank charges & use an ATM there. Rates can go up or down. The variation in different bank charges could wipe out any minor changes in the exchange rate. It'll be the same exchange rate in France as it is here.
We simply have a Norwich & Peterborough Debit Card, and taking € cash out at the ATM's in France gives us the as good as it gets rate on the day, with no usuage or conversion charges, just the interbank exchange rate which is usually better than the advertised tourist rate.
Thanks to Brexit the £ has dropped from 1.30€ to 1.20€ although for the amount of holiday € cash that we go through it would make little difference.
We have not bought cash € in the UK for over ten years now, as there is no need, we just keep a bit back say 200€ from the previous trip, so that we have at least som € cash for the next trip.
France isn't a great place to travel to get money changed. Often in touristy places in Spain or Greece you'll find local places offering better than usual rates. I sometimes wonder quite how they do it, money laundering maybe?
