Greg and VangoMan - I have some advice too! I've had GERD, IBS and hiatus hernia for a long time and I'm only 41! I get terrible pain with my hernia, though my unsympathetic GP says I should be have that much pain with it (helpful, huh?).
I tried Omeprazole, but it actually made me have a very upset tummy! So I have been taking Esomeprazole for some time and it works a logo better for reflux. The brand name is Nexium. I have had to do my own research into the hernia, because my health centre just don't care. So, I found out about a fairly old-fashioned, chalky, medicine called Kolanticon. It is a God send. It really helps me when I feel breathless with my hernia or when I feel sick. So, ask your GP for a prescription of that.
Greg - totally agree with the butterscotch too!
A lot of people recommend peppermint for reflux, but it can actually make it worse! It can relax your osophegus too much, therefore allowing more reflux to come up.
It's all so rubbish and tiresome. Let us know how your appointment goes VangoMan. X
weegmack..Sorry I said Omeprazole but it is Esomeprazole I am on and as you say Nexium trade name.
I worked out I have been taking these for over 30 years, started out with Zantac and various others up to now.
I have waited a month to get this appointment (which is to do with test results for my lungs) and it looks like the same time for another one to see same GP about these tummy problems.
Greg..I was given early retirement when I was 60 due to my lung problems and have been on 3 different antibiotics for the last 6 months to try and shift bacteria in my lungs. After the 6 months there is no change so I now have to stay on them for another 12 months (side effects make tummy worse) and will be going into hospital soon for a 10 day stay to get intravenous antibiotics. Also have a chest infection which complicates things. They hope this will help get things improving!
Don't let it stop me going out and about etc. Wife and I are just back from a short break with the caravan and have booked a couple of nights tent camping for next week on my own (wife hates tent camping)!
Vangoman,
15 years ago I was taken into hospital with lung problems which I am positive I contracted working in the seawater waterboxes of the condensers on our massive turbines in work. No way to prove it but I know ,I wouldn't have gone for compo anyway, risk of the job.
I was given 3 days to sort out my affairs as that was my estimated lifespan at that time, and talk to my kids, that was a choker. They didn't have a clue what it was and I have never felt so weak in all my life .I signed a form and they hit me with everything. they had and slowly I got better. The bugbear is because they didn't know what it was, they couldn't say they cured me so when I go back to the States with the wife ,because my medical records say unresolved pulmonary virus I pay a fortune.
In fact I met my American wife(of 15 happy years) online as all I could do was sit in my house by a PC for 6 months and she was researching her Welsh relatives online.
Vangoman ,if a flimsy Welshman can get above it ,I am sure a Jock will beat it all the way.Sad to say mate, in this day and age ,make sure you speak out ,the quiet long suffering patient ,ends up being just that.
You seem the type that would not like to inconvenience people ,please speak up when you are in there.
Good luck mate.
Very best wishes,
Greg
