Truly sad to hear of your situation, it's very tough. But your hubby sounds like he's trying to keep positive with the VW idea.
I can appreciate what it's like having no confidence - I was bullied out of a job once at my lowest ebb when my hubby died suddenly - but give driving lessons a go. Ask around your area for recommendations as to a good driving instructor, particularly those who are good with nervous novice drivers, and give it a go. Don't pack up after a couple of lessons - there's always ups and downs! If your hubby is up for it, talk about what's happened in a lesson - I asked the stupidest of questions sometimes.
You have many reasons to give it a go: to give your hubby a chance to go away for a short break or even just to one of the many lovely spots in Somerset for a day break; time for each other and to give you confidence in life skills - driving opens up a whole new world of opportunites.
I'm sorry, this sounds horribly like a lecture - I'm not meaning it to be.XX

I honestly don't think I will be able to learn to drive! Seriously! I was bullied at work and I am realising now just how much it has dented my confidence -- as in, I have none at all!
Hi,
I think we all suffer from a lack of confidence somewhere in our lives.
A good driving instructor will instil that confidence.
As well as learning to drive you would be on the road to putting the bullying you suffered behind you.
I would certainly give it a shot ,you might surprise yourself.
May I say how much I admire your husband for his attitude.
An inspiration to us all.
Very best wishes to you both,
Greg

The best way forward is to prove the bullies wrong. Explain things and a considerate driving instructor will be patient and help you along and rebuild your confidence.
We no longer camp and I'd love the camper van your hubby fancies but my OH won't entertain the idea. My son says buy myself one and disappear a few times.

I was petrified when I started my lessons, but after 8 months I passed my test on the 3rd go at age 55. It's been another 12 months before I've felt confident enough to go on the M6, but now I have, it feels like I can go anywhere. Do try having a couple of lessons, change instructors if you don't "gel" with them. I had a very patient instructor who made me practice, practice, practice my manouvres until I was confident and ready to take my test. I wish I'd done it years ago. Hugs to you and your husband, I hope you have some fab trips in the van!
