try and spot the foreign lorry with the same number plate at the back of the trailer as it has on the front of the cab.

Wabbey,   If you talking about articulated vehicles I'm sure they are registered separately, as are cars and caravans in some European countries.

In most European countries trailers are registered separate from the tractor units so therefore have different numberplates. Some nationalities, Italy & others require tractor unit reg no displayed on trailer along with trailer reg no but most do not.

UK trailers are not registered & legally the number plate of the unit must be displayed on rear of trailer which has plate holder with light.

If a UK reg unit is pulling foreign trailer, ie collected unaccompanied from dock then usual way is for UK plate on chains/clips to be hung on rear of trailer. Not strictly legal as not lit but cops let it go.

Most of Europe register their trailers over 750kg as separate vehicles, so they won't have the same number plate!

When I am driving on motorway, which I do frequently and see a foreign plate on a wagon I am immediately more cautious. I still think about a Family that were wiped out by a HGV driver from Portugal that slammed into the back of their people carrier on the M6 a few years ago.

Certainly in France it is any trailer with a max weight of over 750kg.
A friend has had great fun getting his racecar trailer that is over 25 years old registered over there. The local Prefecture wanted to see the original Bill of Sale!

Same here. I give foreign plated vehicles more room. Especially the ones with yellow plates.
British plated cars and trucks tend to speed in Ireland....

British plated cars and trucks tend to speed in Ireland....


Over here it is the ones from Ireland coming off the Holyhead ferry that speed and seem to be racing each other. Are truck drivers hard to prosecute in another country?

I was behind a French car transporter today on a minor road and was mystified when he kept going onto the other side of the road. At first I thought he was avoiding potholes until I realised he was avoiding high trees overhanging the left side of the road.

The UK has no reciprocal agreements to allow collection of speed camera fines from foreign registered vehicles so unless they are actually pulled up by cops they can speed with impunity.

Next year there was supposed to be an EU agreement about cross border collection of speed camera fines coming into force but due to brexit presumably UK will be no longer involved in that.

The UK has already signed up to it so it will come into force as we will still be in the EU at that time. Whether this is part of the final agreement we will have to wait and see,

Wonder if Foreign hgv's in the future will have to pay some form of british road tax when they còme into the country. Our vehicles have to pay tolls on European roads
