On the great Christmas pressie idea hunt again. OH has 2 pairs of biinos, one compact pair and a full sized pair. Neither of them particularly great. I'm looking for a good full sized pair of biinos. Up to about £150 or thereabouts. Mainly for use when camping and looking up to the hills and mountains. Thanks
One outlet which you may not have considered is RSPB.
They have a really wide selection for all budgets and having tried a few pairs in one of their shops even their own branded product appear to be of decent quality.
Can't speak to models, but based on my experience - avoid any with that rubbery coating they used certainly a few years ago. Not sure if they still do.
Ours have gone "sticky" just like all the kitchen power tools with the same coating have.
Whoever dreamed that up wants shooting.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

OH bought me a pair of Breast Condor 8x32 bins the other year and I'm very happy with them. Use them for birdwatching
Bresser Bresser Bresser! Damned autocorrect! Even now it's tried to put breeder instead of Bresser
I'm no expert but if it's mostly for using from the campsite, have you thought about getting a spotting scope? You really need a tripod for them so they're not so good for using on the hoof but I believe the magnification is better.
I don't know exactly where you are but the RSPB at Lochwinnoch has a shop with a selection of binoculars and scopes to try and I'm sure they could give you advice too.

Also, the only other bit of limited knowledge I have is don't go too big, 8 or 10x 32( maybe 40) , binoculars bigger than this are prone to shake.
I work with microscopes and I'm used to complete precision and clarity, which means I have unrealistic expectations of binoculars. I'm in process of buying a scope for next visit to South Africa .

RSPB are by far the best. We have tried all the so called super makes and ours beat them hands down. Ease of use....quick focus...light to carry...we would never use anything else. Ideal for camping, walking, birdwatching. Cannot be beaten.
Go to a shop that sells binoculars and try. Some bins suite some people and not others. Got to be honest, I wouldn't buy RSPB, rebranded Vanguards I believe, with a higher price tag. Somebody mentioned Hawke, decent value for money bins. I was bought a pair of Nikon Aculon 8x42 bins as a retirement present, already own about six pairs of bins. Really suprised me, good light transmission, twist up eyecups and good quality. Think you can get them for about £60. I would recommend these for general use.
