Hello all you Scots and Scotland fans. My Parents were enthusiastic caravaners in the late 50's , early 60's, and with my 4 siblings and I we had many memorable trips North of the border. Dad had a Standard Vanguard and a 4 berth Palladin caravan and a Buckta Falcon tent for myself and my 2 Brothers ( Sisters and parents in the van, when this was possible, otherwise all in the caravan for overnight stops in Lay-bys, Dad had adapted it !!). My parents were adventurers and we never stopped anywhere for more than 2 nights.
Dad wouldn't go in August so the Easter Holidays it was. We went all over, Fort William, Loch ness, Inverness , Glen Affric, John O Groats, Smoo Cave, Durness, Ullapool, The Caingorms, Glen Shee, Edinburgh.
I've been back several times since, out of season, and the weather has always been ok, especially on the west coast, and remember... there's no such thing as bad weather.. just the wrong clothes

Haste ye Back

Then you, like I enjoyed the joys of the NW Highlands with a van in single track days! All added to the excitement! I know progress must happen and it's great for local communities and if it gets more people to appreciate our wonderful country and meet the real people, then that's good too.

Don't tell everyone, they will all want to come...

My thoughts exactly!

Of all my visits over the years the only place I feel has changed dramatically is Skye.

On our first visit the bridge had just been finished and it cost almost as much as the ferry to cross. The free bridge has now made it part of the mainland and whilst it has been good for the island in terms of money into the economy it is no longer the hard to get to haven it once was.

Coral Beach at Dunvegan used to take some finding and once there you had it yourself. Now you could build a 100 space car park and it would be full most of summer!

Couldn't agree with you more on Skye though been a great year for tourist operations there. Neist was gridlocked more than a few times I hear. For me, the only way to go to Skye if you have time and not in winter is the Glenachulish ferry. Great drive either side and the most amazing vessel. Not for caravans and huge motorhomes though.

This is a common problem - places become a victim of their own popularity. When we first started venturing down to the Lake District, it was fantastic. You could park for free in many places and find accommodation with little trouble. The A75 went through many of the small towns in what is now Dumfries & Galloway and the M6 didn't reach the border.

Now, a new A75 bypasses most places and when you arrive at the lakes, you mortgage your house for the privilege of parking.

Of course, the opposite can be true as well. I have seen pictures of our local beaches in the 50's & 60's, packed with tourists. Those of course were the days when the UK had a rail network and we looked forward to a day at the seaside.

Now, while Skye may be packed, if I see a couple of dozen people on Fraserburgh beach in the summer, I consider it crowded!

Over the last couple of years I've become a fan of the Moray coast and Speyside. If you like to see dolphins, walking, cycling and especially whisky, this is the place to go.

Since returning from exile in Hampshire, I've been meaning to do a nostalgic grand tour of Dumfries & Galloway and my family's homeland in the borders.
Ah, happy days in the 70's driving down the A75 on way to holidays in the Lake district. Maybe next year, but I've been saying that for ages!

We went to Dumfries and Galloway for a week this year, what a wonderful hidden gem it is. We really loved it so pretty.

Don't tell everyone about D&F. Me and a mate used to get the bus from Ayr to House o hill and spend days tramping the hills and bogs in Galloway. Empty they were as everyone headed North.

Preferred some previous ones, but glad Mull got a mention!

Friend was on ferry a year back and he was chatted up by a female. She and her partner had come over to Mull on a day trip and was regaling friend about Mull having a nice pub, a Spar and a pizza place. This lady asked friend about a castle (Duart) and said it was a shame they'd not finished building it. (Scaffolding up to deal with some repairs.) Hats of to friend and his wife for keeping cool and giving some background and for keeping cool when the same pair said all about Craignure and they'd seen Mull. They were astounded when they found out there was much more on Mull and Iona than Craignure but not embarrassed - guess it was just a tick list!

The best I heard was when some lads were talking to an American tourist on a Calmac boat. They invited him to join them at a pub where there was always a good Craic.

The American was horified and said NO. When they asked him why not, se said that he never touched drugs! The lads just fell about laughing.
