Have been diagnosed with this unpleasant virus, four days of discomfort, shooting sharp pain, blisters on my face and around my eye. Antiviral med and painkillers.
Depressing to read that it can take some weeks to recover.

Nothing to do but think of next year and planning FC escapes.

It can be a horrible thing to have.

I got it 6 years ago round my rib cage and actually ended up with ME to boot. I've also had a second bout of shingles this year on my face.

My OH had it earlier this year, it was very uncomfortable, but the worst was over in a week or 2. However it has been slow to recover. Eye still not right.

You have my sympathy. I had shingles around my chest a year ago and it was the most painful thing I have had to endure for so long. I think it took a full 4 weeks for mine to disappear. I can't offer any advice for relief except make sure you take the antiviral meds as they will certainly shorten the illness.

I was given some strong painkillers but they didn't seem to work and the side effects of those were scary so I stuck to paracetamol which worked best although never totally relieved the pain. I also used calamine lotion which helped a little. All you can do is stick it out and look forward to the relief when it finally goes.

I returned from doing charity work in Romania in the 90's. Had to drive back home after two weeks working, back to Scotland. Suffering from food poisoning and went to my GP who confirmed I also had shingles which was just beginning to kick in.
Terrible pains around my chest and waistline, could not bare clothing touching my skin.

The vaccine is now routinely available on the NHS, but only to people in their 70s.

I know 2 older ladies (80s) that have had it in their heads for over 2 years, they still describe the pain as excruciating

I'm hoping that this doesn't hang around for years!
I have really sympathy for the children who get chickenpox, and their mums.
Still, onwards and upwards, tomorrow is a new day and one more day to getting better. Thank goodness for antiviral........and for your comments.

Poor you - it's so unpleasant. Very painful. My daughter had ocular shingles before her exams last year. She fought it off without antivirals and it hasn't returned. But it was very painful. My mum-in-law had shingles a few years ago but it went away in 4 weeks and she's been fine since.
Hopefully your meds will work and you'll fight it off. Rest up and don't over-do it? Hoping you have a speedy recovery. Xx

I had chicken pox when I was 37, and shingles a couple of years later (several times over a few years). Chicken pox made me proper poorly and took a long time to fully recover from, but shingles was far more painful.

I now get attacks of neuralgia on the area where I had shingles, and that's very painful too!

I'm on permanent pain relief due to the nerve damage from my first bout. It used to be so bad that i felt like i knife had been stuck into my ribs. The pain when the nerve is in fire mode floored me. I was having so many attacks that I'm now on Gabapentin that i keep on a 'maintenance' dose. When it starts firing again, i can just up my daily dose for a few days/ weeks till the episode subsides.

It did mean that when i got my second dose of shigles, the one thing i didn't have was the firing nerve, due to the maintenance dosage i was already on.

couldn't agree more, I had a bad bout of shingles 35 years ago, and every time I get really down down or another illness the rash comes back all be it only mildly
which takes me down even more.
it's a viscous circle that never really goes away

It was Gabapentin that my GP prescribed for me. I took one tablet and it made no difference. Then I read up on it and it takes at least a week to kick in and then you get hooked on it and have to come off it gradually or it can make you ill! Booger that I thought, and stuck to the Paracetamol which at least helped a little with almost immediate effect.

I had shingles on my back when I was about 22. I always thought it was something "old" people got before I got it. It was painful and I did feel generally unwell. I don't know what caused it but I remember I was particularly busy at that time I was involved in a local Pantomime production, was really busy at work and going out a lot with friends clubbing and drinking.

It took me a week or so to recover. Hope you feel better soon. X

Shingles is like polio you think you're over it and then it comes back for another go years later.

Thankfully we had a vaccine for polio when I was young
