never thought i had it as it was always a 'no' when asked if i wanted it.
turns out i did!
got a letter from barclays telling me i had it and i want to claim for misselling.
well i filled in the form online with lots of 'don't knows' in the boxes and they upheld my complaint within a week.
so i just spent the whole £55 on some new hinges for my patio doors, one of which had broke on monday.

Likewise, my son in law persuaded us to fill in the forms for the same PPl firm that he used last year, and although we thought we had never had it in the past, they found that it had been added to our bank accounts since 1991. It was a nice suprise when we got just over a thousand pounds back in refunded payments, interest, and compansation, as it would not have been valid if l had have tried to claim as l was not in full time regular work, but picked up nursing agency jobs to fit around our family childcare as and when l could.

Why is it that you have to apply to a third party ( or do you ?) Why can't the bank just refund you the money that you are owed ?....or am I missing something.

My bank got in touch twice. Once for a car loan and once for my visa card. Total about EUR1500. Never had to involve anyone. I spent it camping.

Not sure about now, Rob, but a few years back, I would ignore any invitations to make a claim via third parties.
A/ I wasn't even sure we'd ever had any PPI in the past.
B/ With a lousy memory, and an acute lack of paperwork, I wouldn't have known where to start!

Then I heard mention that the Banks etc. were now (then!) being instructed to come clean, and go direct to those who had (or might have) been affected, and cough up accordingly. That seemed to be true, as we were contacted, directly, by both Natwest (previous loan(s) and MBNA (finance for a car).

They gave us the finer details (account numbers/details/dates/values etc), and all we had to do was to agree to them investigating fully, and reimbursing/compensating where applicable. The only apparent "catch" was that we had to agree to accept their findings and decisions, and that further claims (for those specific accounts) could not be made.

As we had nothing to lose, and as we didn't need to prove our case/details, we signed and returned the forms.
Just a few weeks later, between them, we potted a cool £5k+.

Hi Rob,
After advice from my son,who had been a graduate bank manager, I just contacted my bank directly.
Having been in dire straits financially years previously
with a divorce, I had given the credit cards and loans a real hammering.
I was payed a surprising amount of money for my loans, but they disputed the credit card.
On advice from my son I went to the ombudsman who upheld my claim.
Had I gone through a claims company they would have pocketed much of this payback.
Well worth the effort.
Best wishes to you and the family.
Regards,
Greg

This is a class of business actively promoted by the Govt back in the day. It transferred some of the burden of supporting loan repayments after unemployment etc from the state to the private sector.

In itself, the cover could be crucial - for example, maintaining mortgage payments, and therefore the roof over the policyholder's head.

But unlike most other types of insurance, it was the lenders who sold it. And mis-sold it.

They often made it a prerequisite to the loan. Effectively, it was insuring their risk of default, but being targeted on sales, staff would be less concerned about eligibility. They were more interested in the bank's commission. And punters, as ever, didn't read the bumf.

The other side of the coin is that insurers, my old employers included, paid out millions in valid accident, sickness, and unemployment claims. Mortgages were paid. Credit card balances were paid off.

You'd think from the "industry" that's grown up around this that no-one ever qualified for it in the first place, and never had a claim paid. That's complete rubbish.

But I'm really only exercised over it, because we never had any
