We hardly ever lock the doors. We do have two dogs though so if you're thinking of breaking in you'd be thankful for the open door if you get that far

Just another angle of thought from the original question of key in or out.

Thinking more about the UPVC cylinder type locks here, but not exclusive.

Most of the cylinders available would render the door unable to be opened with a key from the outside if a key is in the cylinder inside. This would be if any family or friends may need to gain access for emergency or help to the homeowner if mobility is compromised for whatever reason.

There are cylinders to this exception though, these do allow for access from both sided via a key if a key is left in the cylinder inside the house.

Just a small thought.

Never, but I used to get recurring dreams about it.

If I go to the theatre or anything, I always make sure I know where the nearest fire exit is before the lights go down. If I stay in a hotel, I check out the route.

At home, I even have a strategy for getting us and the dog out if a fire prevents us from getting downstairs (out of bedroom window onto the flat roof of the bay below, Mr F lowers himself to the front garden, I put the dog in the duvet cover and lower her down, then get out myself the same way).

Mr F used to live in the top floor flat of a large Edwardian house. I was double paranoid there. There wasn't room to get a turntable ladder to the back of the building, and it was a long way up (3 floors plus half-basement, and very high ceilings). My plan there was to put the mattress up against the bedroom door and bedding to plug up gaps to stop smoke getting in, and screaming at the top of my voice so people knew we were there.

I'd far rather be burgled than burnt.

Lola Loudmouth is an excellent guard dog and would go for anyone who came in the house.

When my window cleaner forgot my warning about not doing the back of the house if the dog flap was open, she nipped him on the ankle, the little baggage. Thankfully, he blamed himself!

Indeed. Everybody would, if it was an either/or choice - what today they call "binary". My point is that the original post was about leaving keys in locked doors, and many contributors have shown how there are options to give easy egress whilst maintaining security.

Not many of us would leave the house and leave the doors unlocked. So presumably we're talking about being in the house, maybe asleep at night. I'd suggest there are not many who would retire for the night and leave doors unlocked. I understand the point about experience of and fear of fire, and thankfully, have never been in that situation.

Had I been, I would still have doors locked, and have a quick system of exit along the lines of key near door (not in it) or preferably, a thumb catch to unlock the door.

Maybe it's where I live. I've got a moor on one side, and the edge of an urban metropolis on the other. For me, the possibility of a crack addled burglar is more real than a fire. Then, simple theft of goods might only be the half of it.

I know that for others, the likliehood of that is about the same as being caught in another fire. We all do the best we can for what's likely in our situation.

Always leave the keys in the doors at our house unless one of the kids is still out when we go to bed, in which case we have to take it out or they can't get in. Leave the window keys in the windows too, usually unlocked, sister in law locks the windows and takes the keys out so if there's a fire in the middle of the night at her house they've got to go fumbling around in the dark trying to find small fiddly window keys if they can't get to a door.

I don't think anyone's disagreeing with you Mike; it's very much dependent on your personal circumstances where you live, plus one's personal experiences.

We do, now my Mum and our dog have passed, lock patio and back door, but front door remains unlocked unless both of us are out. This is part of our agreed fire plan and is to do with the design of our house.

Windows are locked but keys are handy if needed. On the other hand, we have, by each set of windows, a tool that will smash them if we need to get out that way. On the burglar front, the one door that can be opened, plus all the rooms downstairs don't have a burglar alarm but simple and cheap movement alarms, battery operated as during the winter we're prone to losing power so electric just as unreliable! You have to do a battery test before you set them each night and if they go off, the sound is like a fire alarm. Even if you were Brahms and Liszt, you wouldn't sleep through them!

I lived next door to a house with complex alarms and it was still burgled - if they want to get in they will.
So your safety should be paramount.
Unless you only have one key on your ring, how many of us, even stone cold sober have had to "look" for the right key when entering the house - especially in the dark.
Now imagine that when smoke is building and the fire growing behind you.

If we have a fire and need to exit the locked front door, no key needed.

It's been said that having a working deadbolt lock will help boost home security. Most burglars always try to break in through the front door.If you don't want your front door broken down it is better to get a good quality one with a hardened steel bolt.

We were speaking only last night to a couple who were burgled whilst in their beds and their car stolen.

The burglars gained access through smashing a hole in the door glass to get the door key in the lock, they then went to the dish on the other side of the kitchen where the car keys were left and took those keys plus a handbag.

I don't leave my keys in the door but I'm a bit of a shocker for forgetting where I have put them. We do however keep a set of window lock keys upstair and one downstairs.

I was about to put in detailed explanations of locks and keys and locations - then thought better of it.

But one thing - due to my authorising numerous claims over the years - always take keys upstairs on retiring. If you run some sort of highly desirable supercar, they might come upstairs a'searching, but still. We don't have that problem. What with driving a Skoda Yeti.
