In the checkout queue the other day, we were waiting for an aged old girl to get her shopping packed. While she was getting on a bit, she was moving very spritely, and not a little trendily dressed for the age. And, nothing wrong in that.

It was only when she was about to leave, and we had moved a bit closer, when she spoke to us, in recognition. The mrs had no idea who she was, while my brain was hurriedly - and embarrassingly (as you do), trying to attach a name to the voice. It was a woman we hadnt seen for 20 years, but had lived next door to for the previous 10!

We hadnt clocked on who she was, because she looked so much older than she should. I wouldnt have had her a day under 70, but we knew for a fact she wasnt 55. Hence the 'quick' packing, and trendy dress - which she always was back in the day.

The obvious reason - she 'lived' under a sunbed all the time we knew her. Her and a mate were always perma-tanned. And while we do see the mate knocking about from time to time - who has obviously kept the tanning up, having a complexion not unlike my grannys old leather sofa, we haven't seen 'Susan' since the day we moved. She didnt have the tan any more, but the skin was puckered like an old tatie.

It was embarrassing, like i say, not to have recognised her from the off, as often you see folk from school etc who 'havent changed a bit'. But we never gave a second look to the 'pensioner', till she spoke. God knows what she'll look like when she does reach 70!

And, i have a sister in exactly the same position. She is barely 50, but every time i see her, i see another long dead granny - just before she died at 69.

69? As young as that, eh? Perhaps I had better keep out of the sun

Actually, having spent my teens and early 20's in the merchant navy travelling all over the world, mostly to hot countries where I could not avoid being exposed to the sun's rays, I am wondering if I can now claim compensation and damages from the shipping company for the wrinkles I am now finding in my skin.

Just settle for all those great memories bob and be thankful for your health , try some high strength nut cream , with cocoa butter , told me it was good stuff , I even had the misses put it on for me , very nice , but didn't get rid of the wrinkles , terrible stuff to get out of your underwear .

i had an auntie who was a model in the 60`s and 70`s.

her daughter was one of pans people, and she retired from modelling and went to work in the posh shops, demonstrating makeup and stuff.

when sunbeds first came out she was first in line to buy one of her own.

she was a lovely colour of aged teak when we buried her due to skin cancer.....

I don't think even I could claim compensation for the sun causing wrinkles in that department
