I see the latest group of people that have been hit by cut backs are coeliac sufferers , the NHS prescription gluten free food has been axed as from April next year .

Very little need to purchase gluten free food. The NHS is being ripped off purchasing gluten free food, £18 for a single pizza base!

Hi , NickH , when you say ( very little need to purchase gluten free food ) is that because yourself and your family do not suffer with coeliacs disease ? if so good for you

.....but on the subject of the NHS being ripped off Hmmmmmm I think there might be a few people on here with some views on the management of the NHS budget IE footing the medical bills for anyone from round the world to have treatment here and not billing their country of origin etc etc .

I am not a coeliac sufferer, nor do I suffer with coeliac disease. I do, however, have an auto immune disease called Coeliac Disease that means I have to follow a strict gluten free diet as even the tiniest amount of gluten will make me very ill for a couple of weeks. I have learnt to live with this disease and I control it, it does not make me suffer nor does it control me (most of the time!)

The only gluten free product that I generally purchase are flour, pasta and sometimes bread as we normally cook from scratch using naturally gluten free products.

I don't believe that given the range of naturally gluten free foods and specialist gluten free foods that are available now there is a need for prescription, a service that dates back to when gluten free or Coeliac Disease was unheard of in supermarkets or restaurants. That and the extortionate amount of money the NHS is charged for items readily available at a fraction of the cost down the road at the local supermarket.

I would much rather my taxes were prioritised into areas that truly required the funding (and at a appropriate cost - but that's another bag of worms!)

Hi NickH yes like I said maybe we should look into who is charging the NHS ludicrous amounts for the gluten free products , we too use the Bread flour ,pasta ,and the occasional cake and I mean the occasional cake as a treat for our youngest lad who has downsydrome , guess we will have to disagree on areas that truly require funding but I think this one of them , footing the medical bills for all and a sundry , in this time of (austerity) I am sorry but I think we should be taking care of our own , Thanks for your input tho .

The NHS should not be carrying out free treatment for health tourists but that is another issue.

The question is where the line should be drawn on treatments. Some people go the their doctors with minor ailments and their prescriptions cost the NHS a lot of money for simple things that are only a few pence at pharmacists. If they had consulted a pharmacist initially the perhaps it would have saved the NHS £30.

Should the NHS be picking up the tab for dietary requirements? A difficult one, and there are lots of areas which are like this. Should people who want gender re-assignment be funded out of a budget for treating sick people?
