If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
The fashion industry exporting from British designers is worth billions
OK, I was being a bit bitchy, but I genuinely feel that the Honours system is a tad tacky (as are some elements of the media). There's some people I know who've been given OBEs and MBEs who have given a long lifetime of service to the public, often without any financial reward, and the press don't give any notice to these people. We'd possibly be a much more pleasant nation if their good works got more recognition, rather than focus attention on celebs. Not everything is about money and fame.
------------- " When I die I don`t want my life to flash before me in an instant, I want it to be a 3 hour epic !"
What I can't understand about the celeb OBEs, MBEs and Knighthoods. Is that it could be for contribution to sport of whatever.
It is crazy that these people do well financially at their sport or whatever and then go on the celeb ciruit making more dosh and some end up a Sir or a Dame etc.
Can we really justify someone riding a bike, whacking a tennis racket, rowing a boat, failed politician or crooked retail giant and being well paid for it becoming a Sir??
All they have done is to do well at there "job", just like nurses, doctors, fire officers etc..
Don't see many of then getting gongs!
I honestly believe the Honours system has to change or be scrapped, as it appears to have lost its way and became another celeb event, where the celebs are amongst the elite and landed gentry and general undeserved of our nation.
------------- It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
The media obviously focus on the celebrity part of the honours list as they think that's what the public are interested in, but if you actually bother to look (and it is a 124 page PDF) you'll see that there are a lot of ordinary people on there who deserve their recognition but probably don't want any sort of publicity.
Yes I did actually bother to have a look but wasn't prepared to read it all. Still does not justify the celeb culture with the honours list which was my main point.
Unless you disagree?

I couldn't have put it better myself...and in the old days actors and music hall artists were not highly regarded other than for their entertainment value. I should know...my grandmother was a music hall singer
I do think that some of these Knighthoods are dished out more and more each year. Some of the entertainers are paid enough that is a good enough reward. The money they get is indirectly earned by us Joe Public.
