True, but £73.10 a week doesn't go far when you are dependent on take-aways and prepared food. Even a Sainsburys "meal deal" is £3 for a sandwich, drink and packet of crisps, although I suppose Greggs is pretty cheap. And they have to pay for drinks, too, even water. They should bring back public water fountains imo.
In a town near me, there is a shop that sells 500ml cans of strong cider for 68p. The cheapest bottle of water they sell is 75p. What a crazy world we live in where water is more expensive than booze ...

Walk into any public house and ask for tap water , they provide it free of charge , and a lovely girlie smile as she flexes her strong chest muscles and pulls it , mmmm , now cider is entirely a different matter , drunken farmers and country bumpkin oiks sup the stuff , and often you can't even see your birds face through the muck , though for some that is a bonus , not me of course , mine are all goddesses through the beer goggles of a fine pint of Yorkshire smooth , and cider usually costs an arm and a leg , often both if hit by a particularly large lorry , cue opensauce ....

I appreciate your job, and your concern for these people
on £73 a week.
Do you realise there are pensioners who have worked all their lives on less than that when you take away tax etc.
I quite appreciate your concern for these people, but who speaks up for the pensioners in worse conditions because they cannot get out and beg ,and wouldn't anyway.
I really sympathise with people who cannot cope with living in society for many reasons.
I do however get annoyed when people who have worked all their lives are treated worse than the people you represent.
Some have lived through terrible times and conditions.
Perhaps some of us should stop and give them a thought as well.
They don't care how much cider is, but they do care how much gas and electricity is, just to keep alive.

Good post Greg, the basic pension is not a lot if its your only income.
I won't give to Oxfam etc as our govt gives billions in overseas aid each year.
What happens to charity begins at home?

Well said Greg..help is seldom there for pensioners who are sometimes to embarrassed to ask for help, despite as you say working all there lives.
They also freeze to death but in their home.!

The thread is about homeless people. Where do pensioners come into & what is the connection?
Sorry it's a red herring. You sit there somehow slightly bothered at the suggestion that the homeless should be helped while pensioners who fought wars might be freezing to death on meagre pensions. Ie save the pensioners before the homeless because the pensioners are more deserving?
The only connection I can find is that both demographics are simply failing to connect with society around them. If the could then neither the homeless or the freezing pensioners would be in the predicament they find themselves in.

I was trying to make the point there are people who are not homeless in dire straits as well.
In some cases ,yes they are more deserving.

Correct, but the common denominator is that neither is receptive to help. If you connect with others then help is usually forthcoming. I'm a pensioner myself so about during the day & I help several others much older than myself. The reason I do is because they ask for my help. There are one or 2 about who are unfriendly & miserable. They don't ask for any help & I don't offer it because I know what the answer would be be.
Anybody can get help if they connect with those around them in a friendly & positive way. At all levels of society it is about networking. Those who can do it positively will always get the help they need.
If anybody passes a beggar & thinks "what about the poor pensioners?" then best they go & help a poor pensioner provided that poor pensioner actually wants any help.

It's very commendable you helping others OS.
I still think however ,not every old person ,or even homeless people have access to networking with others.
Many slip through the net every year, and probably ,through no fault of their own many would have taken any offer of help if they had been on the radar,so to speak.
I do take your point though OS.

I will be a pensioner this year and I have probably got a bit grumpier in my old age as have most oldies in my opinion, going by posts on this forum.
I don't let someone being grumpy stop me from helping them, there is a reason for everything just like the homeless or begging.
In my experience older people are very proud and reluctant to ask for or are unaware help is out there.
I also agree that a lot are just not on the radar and slip through the net.
Also in my experience the younger generation are fully aware what their rights are and what benefits are available and make full use of that knowledge.
Not a criticism just an observation over the years dealing with younger and older people.

I have found that a solution to the problem is to inform your children that your entire estate will go to that child that best cared for you in your lifetime. Losers in this contest are to cremated alongside the parent.

Being just a few years from pension age myself, I am very aware of how difficult it is for pensioners to manage. However, the minimum someone of SRP age should be getting is £155.60 pw (if their SRP is below that, they're entitled to a top-up of pension credit to bring it up to that figure). That's more than double the amount that a single person below retirement age will get, despite the fact that their outgoings will be broadly similar.
There are other things that I think are more unfair to pensioners than basic benefit rates, like no mobility element in attendance allowance (like you should resign yourself to being housebound because you're over 65!) and not being entitled to carer's allowance if you're caring for someone else. But at least they're not affected by the bedroom tax!
And if someone over retirement age finds themselves homeless, the council (quite rightly) has a statutory duty to house them.
I also think that there should be a taper on private pensions, so that people who have saved for their old age don't end up just as badly off as those who haven't. There's no incentive to make private pension provision, unless you can afford to save so much you'll be comfortably off.

I could live very well indeed on £73 a week if I didn't have to pay rent, council tax, electricity bill, gas bill, phone and internet, car tax, car insurance, fuel, MOT, income tax, water meter bill, not to mention feeding and clothing the wife...almost worth going homeless!
