Well I guess as we move into the future, it will be possible to store off peak electricity in battery packs, to then be used at peak times.

The girl at EDF Energy asked if I preferred my SMART Meters to send readings every 20 seconds or 20 minutes!

You mean they will have have battery packs at the power stations, Who knows whats in the future.

A major use for off peak use of electricity is for the recharging Electric Vehicles.
There are many benefits to the distribution network management if every household had a smart meter.
There are ongoing projects that use massive Batteries the size of a very large Artic for storage,there is also a study into the viability of what is referred to as VtoG (Vehicle to Grid) use of the batteries in EV's to reduce peak demand it's a very complex situation.
