Get something on the roof (box or bikes) to take you above 1.85m, then you go in with the motorhomes and coaches, and get a lovely high ceiling!

Umm. A tube with a high ceiling.

In another tube.

Under the sea.

Tricky one.

Only 35 mins of nervousness (For Muckerette, not me) though.
The time flies sitting having a picnic in our own car.

Think on... it's the future!

Hmmm... bobbing about in a very heavy bath tub on top of the sea, miles from any escape route.
Tricky one!

If you want fear. Fear a tunnel fire. No escape as the fire sucks in air from both ends at speeds of 150mph. No escape for heat so the fire becomes hotter than the surface of the sun. After the fire has burnt out there is only black carbon left.

Ha. No, the future will be a 15 min taxi ride to LBA when I'm not up to long drives any more

The tunnel wasn't built last time we went from Kent, and Dover > Calais is too short to notice weather. Quick sandwich and walk round the shops and you're there.

On the longer crossings we might have been lucky. Never a problem. Nice meal and bottle of vino collapso and we hit the sack and wake up there.

No lower M1, M25, M20 or worries about o/n's this side or that side.

It's our present

... and even if we did escape, we'd probably get crushed two nights later, when that 400 year old manky French pine tree falls on our tent!

That's it, I'm packing in camping. Goodbye!

Are you wise?

A la carte dining both ways and a private cabin = no kids.

Actually, you're right. Once. St Malo return is at the wrong end of the day so one time we got a fast boat crossing from Cherbourg to Portsmouth. No cabins.

It took me a good 12 months to get over it. Then we switched to Caen. Problem solved.

Ba humbug (unless they're my kids or my grandkids). Then it's, "oh, bless em".

Youngest DD is coming with us to France this year. She's flown in in the past once all the hard work's been done. This time she's travelling with us.

True stress is a 30 yr old asking "are we there yet?".

Ah, but I did. I said....

"Once".

But yes, personal preference then.

90 minutes to Hull, board, dinner in The Brasserie, head down, breakfast in the Brasserie, start your engines, on site by vin rouge time.

Or.

6 hrs A1/M11/M25/M20 to board a tube in a tube to have sandwiches then find somewhere to o/n.

Still tricky

But yes, if we move to Dover or Folkestone I'll re-think. And take anesthetic

I'll never forget that tragedy, my eldest son was crew on the Sofe (Spirit of free Enterprise) and they should have been on that service but had swapped services with the Hofe (herald of free enterprise) as Sofe had an engine down so they did the shorter run to Calais whilst Hofe did the longer Zeebrugge service. I spent most of the night glued to the ship to shore radio trying to get updates. The Coastguard were putting out regular requests for any vessel in the Dover strait with divers on board to respond. They did get a response from a RN. vessel which did attend and assist

State cabin with steward and complimentary mini bar. Silver service restaurant, own wine for when mini bar is finished. Breakfast away from the screaming kids and then off the ferry. Give me that over a tunnel any day plus the ferries are closer to the places we want to go.

Re ferry vs tunnel, either will be the safest part of the journey. Much more likely to be killed in a RTA driving to the ferry or tunnel.

But the mind does not always see it like this. I know how safe flying is but I am too scared to fly!
