Former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died at the age of 83.

Surtees is the only man to have won the grand prix world championship on both two wheels and four.

He won four 500cc motorcycling titles - in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 - and the F1 crown with Ferrari in 1964.

For anyone that raced motorcycles & F1 cars in the era he did dying of old age is an achievement in itself.

He was a very quiet shy man. I used to go into his shop in West Wickham, where he would still repair bikes, even after winning his Grand Prix race.

Sad news. We'll never see his like again.

He'd still show up a motorcycle events and ride in a parade lap until well into old age, according to Mr Fran. Mr Fran's dad used to race sidecars up until the early 60s, and Surtees was an absolute hero to him.

Despite growing up very near West Wickham, Mr Fran didn't know that Surtees had a repair shop there, though!

My Mum who is 91 called me today to tell me .
He was all that made Britain great (H & S take note).
Met him briefly once at Manchester Classic Bike show, a very unassuming man.
I am not going to say very sad.
That man can look down and think"Job done"

I absolutely adored that man, how he was never made a "Sir" I just don't know. Perhaps he was just way above that.

What an absolute legend, one of the greatest and one of the best.

A very sad day, but as Greg said, job done.

RIP Mr Surtees..............Thank you.

I met him once, he was running a bike up Shelsley Walsh hillclimb. No airs or graces, no big I am, he was just happy to enjoy running his 'bike up the hill and chatting to people. He must have been in his mid sixties by then and he didn't hold back from giving his bike The Full Beans and putting in a very respectable time.

RIP John.

A great shame and a true legend.Racing with bikes and cars were the best time to watch it.They now give nighthoods at the drop of the hat nowadys.
