I have a problem with right knee pain & swimming was suggested as a good form of low impact exercise. I haven't been swimming in a pool since I was a teenager (so twenty odd years ).

The thing is I never used to bother with protecting my hair when I was a kid, but it's a different story now I've an expensive head of highlights!!

The advice online is varied. Some say to wet hair with tap water or wet hair & apply conditioner (don't think the local pool would appreciate me swimming with a trail of conditioner behind me) or leave hair dry and wear a swimming cap. There's also lots of expensive protective hair products.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated? I don't want dry, brittle, green hair!

I have highlights and swim. My hair hasn't gone brittle or green! I rinse it well in shower at pool then wash when i get home.

I have long hair. I tie it up high with a band to swim. Unless you're into underwater swimming, your hair will be largely dry after your swim, just damp at the neck and forehead. I leave mine to dry naturally, and have wavy hair when I take the band off. Or get a swimming cap, they're pretty effective.
Swimming with a sore knee might not be pleasant - it took me several years to,get back to swimming breaststoke after getting knocked over skiing. But it's good heart - lung exercise. Get a lovely shower gel to get rid of the smell of chlorine, indulge in a body lotion, you'll be fine.

Thank you for the replies. A swimming cap it is then, probably with big flowers all over it to help me feel less self conscious

Thinking about it I'm not planning on underwater swimming or even back stroke for that matter! Starting off with breaststroke & ibuprofen for my knee.

Just in case any of your hair does turn green, applying tomato ketchup will put it right...honestly.

I have silver highlights...water doesn't make them go green.

If you haven't been swimming since a teenager be careful...be very careful!

Many years ago I held a lifesaving certificate but a few years ago when I was at a campsite with a pool, I decided to jump in at the deep end, only to discover I had forgotten that you had to wave your arms and legs around a bit to stay afloat. After drinking half the pool and finally managing to splash my way back to the side, I decided to stay in the shallow end.

But did your braces manage to still hold your trunks up?

My hair is highlighted and I've nevver had green hair after swimming. I just do a quick wash with shampoo in the showers at the pool then do a proper wash when I get home.

I was advised to do water exercises (not breaststroke swimming though because its hard on the knees) for health issues around 3 years back, and I sympathise with your knee problems!

Modern hair colours should not be affected by the chemicals in a well kept pool.

In relation to keeping hair in good condition coloured hair tends to be more porous than non-coloured hair. It is probably preferable for hair to absorb tap water rather than pool water, theoretically therefore if you wet your hair under the shower before entering the pool it will be `full` of tap water and unable to `absorb` pool water. Its what I do before my aqua-size classes.

I also find that washing my hair thoroughly and conditioning immediately after getting out of the pool, gives the best results!

What trunks?

That was when I still had a body to die for and didn't need braces
