Why is PE no longer PE in schools?

I've got one in primary and one in secondary and they both do PE.

Admittedly the primary one doesn't do full on sport in PE like football. I get that as it's a mixed class. They do a wide variety of physical activity - circuits, ball games, etc, and outside whenever possible. They bring in sport coaches to do it. It's no different to how I remember PE at that age!

My secondary one does a half term of football then rugby and I'm waiting to see what the summer will bring (athletics and cricket I should think) He's on both the rugby and football school teams.

Am I missing something? Should PE be something else?

In Primary School, they should do mixed football. In junior football, girls play in the league games with the boy's. Often see mixed teams. Even at a high competitive level.

When my son was in primary school, they didn't do competitive games. They only had a football team, that was it. Sports day, was not sports day. The way they did there wasn't any winners really. It was just problem solving stuff.
Secondary school was a bit different.

Both my boys play for the village team which includes girls. However, at school I do not think many girls in my 9 year olds class would be impressed at being forced to play football. Equally my boy would absolutely hate to do dancing. Hence why I guess primary school PE is mixed and the things they do appeal to everybody. The school also runs after school netball, football and running clubs open to everybody.

Sports day at his school gives points for first, second and third places. The school is split into 3 teams and the team with the most points wins the cup. However, the children with special needs or those that aren't as speedy as everybody else are cheered and encouraged by the whole school. Crossing the line at the end of the race is celebrated whether you come first or last. Is this why people say sports day is a joke? Personally I love seeing the faces of the less able beaming as they cross the line to cheering. And hopefully they aren't put off sport for life as they would have been in my day. I also love watching my very capable 9 year old running a proper race. Competition is alive and kicking.

They also have a sports day against other local schools where the best kids at each race compete. And that is very competitive as everybody wants their school to win.

This is a state school, struggling just like everywhere else.

I guess different schools / education authorities take different views on how they want to approach PE.

My point is that some of the statements are very sweeping in this thread. Kids are lazy and never get off their backsides, PE is a joke etc.

I don't see that.
