Lots of replies regarding Shingles and who has contracted it but no constructive answer in reply to the OP as to what they can take to cure their cronic pain. That's why I posted a genuine NHS link so they could find a solution which they obviously need help with.
Perhaps that is because there isn't anything to cure the chronic pain...if there was, I would have grabbed it with both hands. I made do with paracetamol and calamine lotion as constructively advised earlier.
There are much stronger pain killers obtainable on prescription but you need to read the pros and cons before taking those on board...and they may not help much.
I obtained my paracetamol on prescription but worth noting that many painkillers and other medications obtainable from a chemist will shortly no longer be obtainable on prescription...so even less help from the NHS and getting ill in your old age is going to cost you!
I take your point what you are saying Bob and although I could respond by saying thanks for the response I consider at this point that it would be a matter of respect for the OP just to return their reply regarding their question. The OP is a newbie with no previous posts so lets hope they reply as a matter of courtesy to see if any of the posts were helpful.
If I was the OP I would be comforted by hearing that it wasn't just me feeling like that; sometimes when ill one can feel very alone. A good thing about places like this is that people will do their best to welcome and be supportive to anyone in need, even if they can't help in a practical way.

I really don't think Bob, or the rest of us, were not being helpful or sympathetic. On the contrary, I think sharing experiences is a very inclusive act and in fairness, plenty of people have replied with treatment options. X
I got shingles when I was in Romania in the early 90's. I didn't know what I had but I just felt terrible.
One of the worst things I have ever experienced.
It was around my abdominal area, burning sensation and sharp pains. I had to roll my trousers well below my waist as the material was rubbing the blisters.
A very unpleasant road journey back to Scotland where I got diagnosed and treated.

The first lot of shingles I got left me with chronic neuralgia. Initially I was put on amitryptiline, but as they didn't help, even when I had had to up the dosage to silly levels, I was started on gabapentin for the pain. I've now been on this for five years. I am able to regulate this in accordance with how much pain I am in.
When I got a second dose of shingles last year, I had to up the pain relief to the maximum that I am allowed to take.
Hope you are soon pain free.
------------- My photos allow you to see what I saw at the time that I took it....No messing.
