And did you? We're all wondering how you got on...
My bike was from an Independant local shop in town, but it was set up be a good wee specialist one down a side street in Castle Douglas - I had got a frame for my leg length, but the handlebars were too far from the seat, they sorted that.
You need a decent folding bike. You dont have to be folding it all the time if you dont need, and it would be ideal for someone less than 100% confident - which the mrs is.

Lots of good advice there - thanks everyone! Maybe I'm being a bit old-fashioned about the putting both feet down thing, but I'm harking back to my cycling proficiency test when we were told to put both our feet down! So were my kids.
It is a confidence thing, definitely. I will avoid Halfords, promise!

When doing my cycling proficiency test (many moons ago) I was also told me to do the same, both feet down.
At the end of the day its whatever you are comfortable with and helps you feel confident whilst out on the bike.
Enjoy your cycling

Not yet! Wasn't too well for a bit, but better now. I'm hoping to go looking on Friday or Saturday. I noticed that Evans do an XS Ladies mountain bike. There's a small cycle shop in the next town to me, but nothing under £500, which is out of my budget....
hi I'm bit late to this but am only 5'2 and found the Giant Small frames were too small for me, but then I like to stretch my legs so I don't feel like I'm on a BMX, a 17" frame should be fine for you on a mountain bike, or I think if you're going for a hybrid/town bike they're 16" frame. Go to a bike shop, try a few out and then look on Gumtree if you're unsure at to whether you'll use it much.
I'm 4'10" and can't get a comfortable modern bike because the pedal shafts (if that's what they're called) are too long. Instead, I stick with the bike I was given in 1968 - and it was second hand then. The frame and the pedal shafts are an ideal size for me (a 23" wheel, no idea of frame size).
Perhaps you'd be better off looking at an older bike for this reason as well as the financial benefit?
Well, I did it! I went to a shop in Kilmarnock called Sprockets. Nearly died when I went in there, as all their bikes on display were £1000 upwards! However, they were such nice people and totally helpful. They had lots of other bikes that were very good, but much cheaper. I got one in the sale, which is a perfect fit.
Just have to go out on it now. I've had a pain flare-up, so once it settles down, I'll start building up my cycling in the hope to get fitter! Xx
I got a 15" frame for a wee woman 😂. They've sorted the seat and handlebars too, so it's a good cycling position for me. I'm on my tiptoes still, but (as someone else said on this thread), the blokes in the shop did say to me that when I stop for any length of time, I should come off the saddle, or lean over on one foot.
I think it'll take me a wee while to build up my confidence, but I'm looking forward to using it regularly when I feel well. 😊
