Social media is like any other arena of human communication. It can be trivial, informative, annoying and even dangerous on occasion. All human life is there, writ large.
It's rapid expansion and far reach is what makes it such a phenomenon. It's so difficult to "police" and laws and law enforcement agencies seem to endlessly lag behind. So it's up to all of us to make intelligent informed choices and educate our children to do so too for safety's sake.
I use FB as a way to keep in touch with friends around the globe, as well as former students. I use it for local info like gigs, closed roads etc. I use Twitter for professional reasons, following and posting on matters that relate to work. My partner is disabled and mainly housebound. Social media is an important link to people for him, and we have a closed FB page as our "telephone tree" for emergencies.
I exercise great care in what I put out there, because I value my privacy and my safety ( I previously worked in social work and social workers get stalked, hounded and attacked by people with grudges).
If you don't get, or don't like it, that is fine, you don't have to use it. But please don't make sweeping generalisations about those of us who do.
