Two caravans have been seized by police this morning after coming to officers’ attention as they were driven up Sutton Bank.
Caravans are prohibited from going up or down Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, due to its steep gradient and hairpin bend. An alternative route is clearly signposted through Coxwold and Ampleforth.
At 10am on Monday 5 June, officers stopped two caravans which had travelled up the bank. However, unfortunately for both drivers, it then emerged that neither of them had the correct licence to tow the caravans anyway.
Both drivers were reported for driving other than in accordance with their licences, and the caravans were seized by police – until someone with a suitable licence can come and retrieve them
Unusual to see police that's why I'm sure there are 1000s of unlicensed caravanners, horse box towers & even builders towing trailers behind their vans that are blissfully unaware that they are unlicensed.
Sheer stupidity. Not least because unless your car is on top of the job, you wont have a clutch left by the time you reach the top. And unless your brakes are on top of the job when your clutch burns out, you wont reach the top, so wont have anything left once you've rolled back down in a heap.

Idiots. There are plenty signs starting miles away. Could be because Appleby Fair is due and the Police are alert to the misuse of the road.
Yes but Appleby is 70 miles from Sutton Bank and if they were heading for Appleby they would not be going up the bank.

Yes, but my post suggested the Police might have been there because of Appleby, not that they were waiting for them to go the wrong way. Maybe the guys who were caught were caught by chance because of this. Maybe not. Surmise is a wonderful thing Cynthia
They were lucky they didn't have their cars seized as well. Driving other than IAW your licence will lead to a car being seized in West Yorks. I know one lad who had his car seized for the same offence, and that was for NOT wearing spectacles as stated on his licence. (Even though he had had his eyes treated by laser. - He hadn't notified DVLA!)
I also suppose he failed the "Attitude Test".
