Just a heads up -
I recently got this email from 'Paypal' -

PayPal Service (the 'L' has been replaced by an 'I')

Your Paypal profile is limited. Please ensure your billing information is up to date.


Dear valued client,

We are sorry to inform you that we weren't able to confirm the validity of your current billing information with our automatic monthly billing renewal service.


Why is my PayPal service limited?
We were unable to validate your current billing address and/or phone number.


What can I do to resolve the problem?
You must update your address and phone number on your account by clicking the link below and following the steps. The process takes less than 30 seconds.

This was followed by a 'Confirm your account' button.

The message has the correct Paypal logo at the top of it but Spamfighter caught it and sent it to my junk mail box. I do have a Paypal account linked to my ebay activity but anything I buy from there is paid for from my bank account as I don't keep money in the Paypal one.

Assuming this is a scam I haven't been daft enough to click 'confirm' but some people might at first glance think it's genuine. I hope no-one on here gets caught caught out if it is a scam.

Not sure you're entirely correct here TM but i get your drift.

Spelt PayPal.

Just log onto your PayPal account through their homepage and it will tell you if all your details are correct.

But you are probably correct. Never respond to these type of mails.

I occasionally get these emails (or at least they go directly into my junk folder) and I don't even have a Paypal account.

Always good to remind people to never click on any links in emails that you are not expecting. If you are concerned about your accounts go directly to them and check that all is in order. Never access your accounts through a link in an email even if it looks genuine.

Why would I not be entirely correct? I copied and pasted the email exactly as I got it, the only difference is that the L at the end of Paypal was a capital i in the email, that's why I think it's not genuine, but it came out as l after I'd posted the message on here.

Unless of course it's because I didn't put the capital letter P in the middle of Paypal - basically because I couldn't be bothered

The clue is that a real PayPal email uses your name. Scam email generally does not. Ie dear valued client or whatever. Safe way though is to always log onto PayPal site direct & never through an email link. Same with email from your bank.

Every morning my junk folder has at least 20 and sometimes as many as 50 similar emails.

Fake Amazon orders and cancellations seem to be the popular ones at the moment.

Simply dump them. If there's an issue with accounts it will be flagged next time you go through the official websites of the companies.

As Opensauce says, no valid email will address you as 'Dear valued customer'! If a company cannot address you properly then it does not deserve it's email to be considered seriously!

The other clues come with errors in spelling or grammar ... but sadly that is becoming common in valid communications too.

I had one yesterday claiming to be from Paypal and addressing me by my email address. It didn't go into the junk folder but when it mentioned a purchase I hadn't made and provided a link to click, it immediately looked suspicious so I forwarded it to Paypal at the address Jaiash mentions. I wonder how many people they manage to scam with these emails.

These have been going on for 20 years now. Just like the barclays ones, the Apple ones, the NatWest ones and all the others.

Anything sent to you by a legitimate institution you do business with will be addressed to you personally not Dear PayPal Customer etc.

If you hover with your mouse over the button they want you to press you can clearly see that the link is not to Paypal/Barclays/whoever

If unsure then just delete the e-mail and log into your account via their website or app etc to check.

I was stupid enough to ckick on an Ebay link a few years ago. Next thing I knew someone was selling a £3000 motorbike under my name. I was lucky to be able to sort it out via Ebay Live Chat with just 30 mins to go before bids ended.
