Indeed. The bigger lesson is probably moving from a more traditional layout to a mid engined RWD car. The pivot point is very different to anything else, and this combined with a rapidly changing level of control in an aquaplane situation will surprise an inexperienced driver.
Also, the transition from control to loss of control is much faster in a mid engine compared to for example, the pendulum effect from a rear engined car, or the plough on understeer from a front engine FWD car under most circumstances.
Probably not showing off or going too quick (well, clearly too quick for the conditions), just total inexperience typical of a one hour owner of very atypically handling car. All speculation of course but IMHO the most likely scenario.
