Hello, I'm a complete novice to camping, but myself and my 15 year old daughter have desided that we want to give it a go, need advice on tents, we have a small two man recently discovered not waterproof tent but really need a bigger waterproof one, just don't want to go spend a fortune on one so thort I'd ask you lovely people for some much needed advice x

I would recommend a 3 person sized tent for 2. Must be double skinned to be waterproof, the outer skin keeps the rain off, the inner lets the condensation out. Outer skin up first then hang/clip the inner from this is best design and easiest to erect. Get one with
A front porch or storage area.
Get yourself to a large camping store with a tent display see what you like.
Then get ready, you can't have too many tents.

The British Standard for a tent to be called 'waterproof' is 1500mm hydrostatic head. I won't bore you with what that means but all tent descriptions should tell you what the HH is. These days the majority of tents are probably around 3000hh so double the British Standard. Many tents now are increasing their HH as a selling point and can go up to 6000hh or more (bullet proof).

Usually the higher the HH the more expensive the tent so if funds are limited, anything over 1500hh should be fine for the UK weather.

That said, if a tent leaks it is more often than not through the seams so you need to be looking for a tent which says it has taped seams. That means the seams are taped over on the inside to stop water getting in through the stitching holes.

You will definitely need a tent with a sewn in groundsheet which keeps most of the bugs and draughts out.

There are lots of different makes of tent but you won't go far wrong with a Coleman...very well made and designed and reasonably priced.

Have a think about what qualities you want in a tent.
Agree a sewn in ground sheet is a must

E.G
easy to put up
Size - do you want to stand up in the tent or are you happy to get dressed sitting and lying down
Do you want to be able to sit in chairs or happy to sit o your bed/floor

Cooking a small porch front to cook in on wet days can be useful

Weight are you back packing or driving to a site and unloading it from the car.

If it's a small back packing tent, you won't go far wrong looking at D of E (Duke of Edinborough awards) approved tents.

Avoid festival tents as they aren't likely to last long.

Some of the High street stores sell cheap tents that are designed just for light summer use at festivals, so if they don't list the hydrostatic head of the fabric avoid.

As a nice reasonably priced 2 person tent my son just bought this one which he has used on the East coast and in the Scottish highlands without an issue

I had an Easycamp Milano 5, discontinued now, but the dimensions and layout are worth noting (see the tent review section on here). I used to camp with my son when he was younger, and found this size and layout good for the two of us. We could have 2 decent size sleeping berths, a living area for sitting and eating in, we could stand upright, and yet it was still small enough for the two of us to put up and take down.
