Has anyone mentioned the Honda CRV?
I wanted the auto version, but the tow limit is lower than 1,500Kgs, so I scrubbed it of the list.
My mate pulls a 1,600 Kgs van with his manual version, and he's quite happy with it.

I have looked at one, Jim. A friend had one for rallying and when he gave up he sold it to his son. Been discussing with son how it's done over the years but, altho' relatively low mileage and for last four years only been on tarmac, it's had a fair few issues. OK, might be just that car!

Just heard about a Subaru Forester 2008, very low mileage as owner been working abroad. Problem is it's an auto and I'm just wondering at my age if I can adapt my driving style to suit!

The idea of an auto is that it is easier to drive than a manual. Try it. You will see what I mean.

On our third auto now.
Would never go back to a manual.

Just tuck your left foot back the first few times you drive it to avoid stamping on the brake pedal.

But I love driving; I don't just use a car for getting from A to B. I've never yet baulked at driving some very different vehicles from a veteran; cars with crash boxes; very early Landies; vintage single seaters through a whole range of small, medium and luxury cars and some of fastest sports cars (albeit now some years ago). Trouble is, late hubby was a test driver and he got me "trained"! I was ditched by his employers many years before he passed on as I was not anywhere close to being classed as a standard female driver!! Even now, a couple of decades after his passing, I still record my journeys and note where I took slightly the wrong line on a bend or should have changed down/up earlier and so on.
NOT having a go at you, OpenSauce, or anyone else.
I know this sounds slightly odd, but, doing this helps me keep up my driving skills as I get older and there's more vehicles, not all of which are necessarily driven by considerate drivers, on the roads. It also keeps that essential "alertness" alive.

Foresters use a CVT gearbox so it will take some getting used to, but don't assume it is always stick it into D and drive. A good auto driver will still use lock up as and when required.
MPG will be around 30.

ficklejade, once you have had an Auto for a few weeks you will wonder why you did not change years ago, especially as you get older.
A better all round driving experience, and far superior for towing.
Good luck 👍😀
