Now I have my new laptop and asked for the files to be transferred. PC World have done this, or so they say, and have sold me a sandisk to transfer but with no instructions on what to do. Any VEERY simple help please? using Windows 10.

Without knowing how much you already know it can be difficult to give instructions.

My first job would be to move everything you want to transfer into one folder on the desktop of your old machine.

Are you confident in doing the task below:

1.Create a new folder on the Desktop called DATA.

2. Copy all the files and folders you want to transfer into this folder. Don't move the originals - work with copies in case there are problems.


If you can do this you can then move to actually transferring the data, if not you may be better getting help.

Is the Sandisk a USB stick or a card? i.e. Does it have a USB connector at one end or is it a flattish, squarish bit of plastic?

It's a stick. I think I will take it back to PC World, I paid for this transfer to be done so at least they could have given me instructions. It's not far away, but the traffic is terrible as it's on the other side of the railway line. Phoning them is a joke.

If you plug it in to a socket on your laptop you should be able to see it in file explorer(file icon in the toolbar). Then you can click on it to open it and move the files on to your new computer.
Though I agree that they don't seem to have done much of a job.

I'm not familiar with win 10, but our Desktop PC has it so I've had a look. It uses 'Classic Shell' to give it a more conventional appearance, but in general ....

On the desktop there should be something like 'My computer' or 'This computer'. Click that and you get a list of drives etc.. They will be 'C', 'D' etc.
Plug in your USB stick, and another drive should appear on the list, say 'G' for example. This is the USB stick.
Click on this and you will get a list of the contents.

Then it's just a matter of dragging and dropping the bits you want from the stick to the folder that you want eg. My Pictures.

Instead of drag and drop, click on anything you want to copy (once) while holding the CTRL key then right click one of the files you highlighted and click copy. Move over to the window with the usb stick and right click there and click paste
