I have a one-off sewing job I need doing and I'm having a hard time getting any company to do it (too small a job, I think).
I'm considering buying a cheap (under £30) sewing machine but I need to sew 1.5mm thick canvas-type material.
I don't mind if the machine doesn't survive the job but does anyone know if a cheap machine will have enough power to get through that thickness of material and last long enough to get the job done?

I think you might struggle with that thickness. Have you tried a cobblers, maybe Timpsons. Or someone else here might be able to point you towards a tent repairer.

With that thickness material you need a decent size needle to perform the task which a standard domestic sewing machine won't be capable of doing the job unfortunately. It will reguire an industrial overlocking sewing machine identical to what they use to sewing awnings together so the cheapest option is to contact an awning repair company which the one in the link below has been recommended by a few people on this forum.

Have you tried CIT in Walton/Hersham? They do tent and awning repairs etc.

Try a small independent alterations company. their machines are commercial standard and may take the job on. I repaired the plastic flap at the bottom of the tent door on my old semi
commercial machine
