Hello.
we're going to lovely Wales again next week and will probably visit Conwy.
We'll use the car park with motorhome parking spots behind the castle where we've been before but this means going through the narrow arch. Since our last visit we've got a newer and slightly wider van it's about 2.8m including mirrors.
i can't find on t'internet the dimension, anyone help please?

This shows the height and width of the arches, is this what you were looking for?

I know that arch - there's not a lot of leeway, is there?! Very fond of Conwy, one of my old stomping grounds. Hope your new van fits through alright so you can continue to enjoy it!

Looking at it on Bing maps, it seems like you might be able to go through town then left onto Mount Pleasant, then do a quick left then right onto St. Agnes Road then left onto Llanrwst Street B5106, to avoid that arch if necessary. Might be worth a look if things are a bit tight.

Just be aware that a lot of the backstreets around the Castle can be quite congested with parked cars, mainly from residents who have no designated parking space of their own.

We too are regular visitors to Conwy, and prefare to take the second river crossing over the Conwy estury, after following the route off the A55 for Bwtes-y-coed, and taking the right hand turn just past Bodnant gardens, follow the road up to the top after crossing the bridge, and theres a pub at the top called the Red Lion, turn right, and it will bring you right into the centre of Conwy on the right side of the arch for accessing the coach and motorhome carpark, with its visitor centre and foot bridge across the old castle moat up into the town centre.

I have towed a caravan through the arches in the past, but the knack is to get them lined up correctly due to the arch not being entirely true and central. The problem is that other traffic is often impatient and doesnt allow you the time or space to square up on the approach before snarling up the road as they approach the mini island onto the main roads out of town.

Finally, just because you can get through one of the Arches, you may find the next one rather tight, they are not all equil widths and shapes, the one out of town that leads down past the chippy just inside the wall, and down to the A55 junction is particularly tight.

Good Luck, if you have a look on Google earth regards that better river crossing across the Conwy estury then you will see what l mean, im sorry to say im rubbish at remembering the road numbers, but we do find the one we use avoids a lot of congestion in the Conwy town centre.

Thanks to all of you for your kind advice.
We are planning to visit Bodnant so that route might work well.
We'll get ready to wind down the windows and flip the wing mirrors but I'll have a look on streetview or similar.
I just hope the weather improves, it's horrid in Yorkshire currently.

Hi Fiznlil, I can confirm that the width of the arch you are referring too is 10'0" and has a height restriction of 12'9". Others in the town are as others have mentioned narrower. Something to bear in mind, is that having negotiated the said arch, you will immediately be required to pass under the railway and that doesn't show a height restriction. The safe height clearance doesn't look very high on Google street maps and I am currently trying to get clarification on that one myself. You will need to check the external height of your motorhome before you go.

Thanks Robbo.
As in my previous post, I have looked on streetview.
If you drive the little yellow man through the arch and then under the rail bridge, turn around and look backwards, there is a road sign saying 12'9" height.
our van is 9'3" wide (with mirrors) and 10' high (unless we forget to retract the antenna!)
I have the dimensions written on my map in both metric and old money.
If you look on youtube there's a coach going through the arch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5En1JEalD94
I don't know how to do links, but it's worth a watch!
Makes me think that we'll be fine because to get to the arch, the coach must have come under the rail bridge.
happy travels!

The open topped bus tour from Llandudno goes into Conwy through the arch by the Castle, then up the hill, through the next arch, turns right and then comes back into town through the next arch.
They are tight but possible.
