I am properly allergic to them (break out in puss-filled, weeping lumps and my blood itches REALLY bad) so if I know I'm going somewhere midge-y, I take a pill a day for the week before and during my stay as it massively lessens the severity of the reaction to a bite.
As good as any midge repellent is, it's all too easy to sweat it off or wash it off if you're in and out of a pool and then the evil little (s)uckers get you
