Regarding a seller called, "the-caravan-and-camping-store",(Ebay seller)
This devious lying towrag altered a listing of a pair of taps i purchased from them after i had complained they were the wrong fittings. The original listing stated the item was suitable for push fittings.I purchased the items based on this description,I then fitted them to find out they were not suitable. I contacted the seller who lied about the man not being there, and immediately changed the listing to another fixing method to avoid refunding me.

I think eBay should be able to see that plus you may have the original listing cached if you go back in your emails. Did you contact the seller via eBay re not as described?

You could have returned them, within the 14 day cooling off period under the distance selling regs, and had a full refund.

Sadly, it`s true.

My daughter sold a saddle for £600.00 on E-bay. It was `returned` a week later (sealed package, signed for). When the package was opened it was an old, broken saddle. Absolutely worthless. E-bay refunded the `buyer`, we couldn`t `prove` the saddle had been switched as the parcel had been signed for (how many times have any of us signed for things without stripping the contents out of the packaging whilst the courier is stood on the doorstep?). We had photos etc but that didn`t prove anything.

Unfortunately the `buyer` lives over 200 miles away, but I have the address and if I`m in the area in the future.... Well.....

good for buyers not so good for sellers.. but it does seem to be the way ebay operates..

i buy loads of stuff from ebay i have also sold lots of stuff.. mostly its all problem free things going wrong are not that common.. but ultimately i think sellers carry more risk than buyers..

Even though they changed teh listing the original listing is still visible.

It will say the listing has changed click here to view the item you purchased.

I buy lots of stuff where the seller changes the specs..

actual wording....

"The listing below has been updated by the seller, but you can see the item you purchased."

where "item you purchased" is the link to the wording when you bought it.

Nothing stops you claiming the item is not as described, even if it was described perfectly, as mentioned ebay side with the buyer 99% of the time.

PS. and opening a case costs you nothing the seller pays return postage. Just reminded me i need to print a label.

I recently bought a small item and was charged £1.76 for postage, the item arrived with a second class stamp, cost 58p. When I asked for an explanation the seller refunded all my costs without question, he explained he had been a seller for over two years and I was the first to question postage costs, he had sold over a thousand items! How much had he made with his postage con?

As others have said your original listing should show details as you mention. You can also click just above (or thereabouts) the sellers description. I think it says revisions and shows any changes to the ad by the seller and it shows time and date it was changed.

Unfortunately postage seems to be set by eBay nowadays. When you list something, the postage box is filled in automatically. I don’t know if it depends on the price you’re asking. It can frequently be a lot less than the actual postage price. So it’s not always win win. Then you have to take into account eBay and PayPal fees so it’s actually rarely win win.

I think if you use Ebays postal service the price is set but you can just use your own method of postage. You don't have to use Ebay's.
Just use any of the couriers online including Royal Mail etc.

Don't forget that there are packaging costs for the seller. However, there is no way an envelope costs all that extra.

Why is it a postage con?
Surely as a buyer, you look at the sum of the selling price and the postage price and set a limit.
For example if an item has postage of £2 and you only think it is worth £6, then common sense telly you to only bid £4 maximum.
I have sold items where I have had to estimate the postage costs, I over estimated but the costs had to include packaging materials, tape, packing foam.

Think most people forget about the 'hidden' costs of postage, like you say - packing, tape, foam and getting to the PO, some villages around here have a 10-20 mile trip to the nearest one (so about an hour of time), but the comment is often "Well it only had £2 on the label, yet they charged me £5 postage"
