We think a hedgehog is visiting our awning each night. Managed to identify the droppings online. Has anyone else experienced this? Our awning is on our seasonal pitch so it will be up for another month. Mr/Mrs Tiggywinkle will have to find another safe haven for the winter.
I'd double check. Hedgehog droppings and rat droppings are very similar. Hedgehog droppings should have bits of beetle in them.

We had two prickly visitors while camping in Holland this year. Trying to get into a bin bag left under the awning. I didn't realise how noisy they are snuffling around, I thought it was a dog at first but when I opened the door I was greeted by two balls of spikes, one bolted instantly the other froze (probably in terror) then made a run for it when I was moving the bin bag out of reach.
We are camped with a mixed hedge behind us, I expect they are smelling the bird feeders. I will speak to the campsite owner who is very conservation minded. The site has a David Bellamy Gold Award so is attracting wildlife. When our van was in storage here mice squeezed up the waste pipes. We remember to put the plugs in the sinks when we leave now!
We are almost overrun with pesky hedgehogs where I live. Whoever said they were in decline needs to come here. They are a particular nuisance because our dog can smell one at 200 yards through brick walls and trying to get her to do her business last thing at night with hedgehogs every few yards is almost impossible. They are covered in ticks, fleas and lice also.
They also make quite a mess on the lawn...which is usually jet black, a little thicker than a pencil maybe, and can be anything from a couple of centimetres to 10 centimetres long depending how many slugs they have eaten. Soft and messy at first if you try picking it up but will dry harder over a period of time.
Good for eating slugs and snails but you either love 'em or you hate 'em...I hate 'em!
I'd happily have some, Bob, there's that many slugs and snails in our jungle! Our last dog learned to keep away from them but my Lab would happily lie outside with his dinner bowl and let the hedgehogs eat from his bowl! What's a bit of hedgehog poo when we've got red deer droppings all over the place?
I've had hedgehogs invading my tent, too.

Unfortunately my dog goes ape when she sees one and would attack it if I let her. She starts tracking and pulling at the lead as soon as she smells one even if she can't see it and loses all interest in everything else. I am tempted to let her try to grab one but I fear she will come off worse and I can do without the vets bill...might stop her from trying again though.
I can remember as a small child when walking to the outside loo one dark night I tripped over one. I was always scared of the dark so that experience terrified me. I guess I have had a bit of a phobia ever since. Perhaps my dog senses this and is trying to protect me
I have never actually seen one on a campsite although they must be around...lurking in the dark!

If your grass is usually jet black, you have more problems than just hedgehogs....
