Having attended several 'live' indoor gigs, I do have a question - why do the sound engineers insist on turning the volume up so much that the music is so distorted through the banks of speakers & you can get a much better 'quality' of sound from an old mono tape deck? (I hasten to point out that it's not from 'choice' I attend - I get paid for being there!)
But to answer the OP question, any item is worth as much as one person is prepared to pay for it.

As Ewen says a crackle comes from a poor pressing or poorly looked after album.
Also as I said decent equipment. I would have thought with your vast experience of music you would have known that.

yeah, you must be right.

coz i`ve never been around high end audio.

all the crap i used was only just capable of perfectly replicating the sound from one end of a stadium to the other....

the mistake you are making is assuming that vinyl sounds better than digital. it is different, but better is a matter of opinion. audiophiles talk about the "richness" and "warmth" of a record, then use words like "sterile" to describe digital recordings.

well two points here.

1) another word for sterile is "clean". a term professional sound engineers use to describe the pure, unadulterated sound you get from a digital recording. the replication of sound with no added (or imagined)warmth or richness.

2) this may come as a shock. you know when you go to a gig. and i mean a big gig. you know all that wonderful pure sound that the band/orchestra/tuppenny whistle is making, that sounds so amazing live?

do you think thats all live?

Yep..Thanks to electronic wizardry, some of the old crocs are still touring today.

gerry, thats a whole degree level question, and the difference between a sound engineer being paid £30 a night and being paid a bloody lot more.

What I mean is, when playing back music - Vinyl Vs Digital...

Digital only 'takes what it needs' to get the sound required...

Vinyl plays back EVERYTHING that was recorded!

White albums aren't worth much even with the photos in them etc . Value increases greatly once the numbers get below 10000. If you have a popular record on vinyl by definition lots of people have it so value is low. Value comes from rare pressings of popular songs or popular artists .   There's a record shop art installation that only stocks the white album. Fir a lot of people digital is the best music format - I can't play an lp in the car and if I'm cooking I've got mucky fingers and am elsewhere -:much as I prefer vinyl it's digital I listen to - and enjoy - most

But only if you have very expensive replay equipment to handle vinyl.
CD players stop at 20.000 cycles, whereas top end record players will go up to 60,000 cycles and more.
Problem is, only the pet dog will hear any notes much higher than 20,000 cycles, and our hearing range reduces as we get older.
With top end record players you can get metering equipment which tells you the very high notes are being played, but what use is that if you cannot actually hear them?
I once had an Sanyo amplifier which claimed to reproduce up to 100,000 cycles. When I connected a CD player to the system, I happened to collect a few scores that were on both vinyl and CD. In reality, there was no discernible distinction between the two.
Bertie.

That nice warm sound? it's called colouration. In the 70's and 80's hifi manufacturers used to fight against it. Then along came digital sound. Now, my hearing aids are digital.
