I always try at least 3 different comparison sites, as they do not all quote the same prices for the same insurer. For example, when I went on one comparison site recently I was quoted £338, but when I went on a different comparison site they quoted me £369 with the same insurer. Try another comparison site, and you may get it down below £414.
Why the crazy differences between insurers? It's ridiculous!

just had my renewal from Saga, this year i paid,£333.00,,renewal price...£426.00,went to comparison sites ,comparethemarket and go compare ,,the meerkats were cheaper, the cheapest quote was £312 £21.00 cheaper than 2018,but they had high excess, and no uninsured driver payment,so settled with quotemehappy at £340,and it ticked all the boxes,,this was for 14PLATE Volkswagen r line tiguan,...i called saga to inform them of my intentions ,eg not renewing and the lady asked if the reason for leaving was the price they quoted and i said yes , she wasn't at all bothered and said thanks for the business and she would delete my bank details and i was covered up until cut off date,,and im positive i will be doing the same again this time next year,

Two years ago I paid Saga £160 to insure my camper, last year it went up to £220, my renewal for this year just arrived - - £485! I phoned them to query such a big increase, it appears they had added UK and European breakdown to it for some reason, and taking that off reduced it to £375. I said that this was not acceptable and it then went down to £330, and then after more discussion £307. Even that means that in 2 years they have almost doubled my premium - - time to go elsewhere methinks.
I have just gone with Comfort, an extra 1000 miles a year, and £259.13.

What you are quoted depends very much on your own circumstances, what vehicle you drive, your experience, and where you live. I alway check at least 3 comparison sites, and a few insurers that aren't on them, every renewal time. I never just renew automatically.
I tried Saga myself on several occasions, both with the car I have now and my previous one, and they don't come within my top 10. They are usually about a third of the way between the cheapest and the dearest.
I am currently with ClubCare through the C&CC, and have been for the past 3 years, but I suspect I won't be when my renewal come up next month, as they charged me quite a bit extra when I changed my car last month. I had been expecting a small reduction, as the "new" car has a smaller engine. It seems different companies like/dislike certain cars.
The main purpose of my original post though was to highlight the unbelievable difference between the highest and lowest quotes on the comparison sites. If one company can quote £356, how come any other wants any more than double the amount, let alone nearly 5 times as much. If they don't want the business, why not just say so instead of giving a ridiculous quote? Surely they must realise that their quote is totally uncompetitive?

Colin

Yes indeed keuken, I'm sure what we have now is better. I'm also sure it does use algorithms as you can get a quote within a minute or so, 24/7.
I too used to use a broker, but I think the comparison sites do similar with regard to commission, as why else would different comparison sites give different quotes with the same insurer? That's why I always check at least 3 sites.
Best quote I have had to date is with the AA through Moneysupermarket.com but Comparethemarket wanted to charge me £30 more for the same policy with the AA. They all vary.
I still think it's weird though that one company wants to charge 5 times what another company quotes for the same vehicle and owner. I would have expected the quotes to have fallen within a much smaller range, possibly with the dearest being twice the cost of the cheapest. I fully accept that a young person with next to no driving experience and driving a powerful, expensive car would pay a great deal more than someone with more than 40 years driving experience driving a small, cheap hatch-back, but the same person driving the same car?? Why on earth does one company want 5 times as much as another whoever the customer is?

Colin
