Dozens of motorists who drove the wrong way on the M11 to escape being held up by an accident are facing fines and points on their driving licence.

Eighty-six drivers turned around following a crash involving six vehicles near Harlow on 27 October.

Following the incident, phone and dashcam footage was sent to police via Safer Essex Road Partnerships' Extra Eyes campaign.

Essex Police said there were "no excuses" for driving the wrong way.

The M11 was closed for around 25 minutes following the crash, which took place at around 13:10 BST. No one was seriously injured.

Adam Pipe, head of roads policing at Essex Police, said all the "impatient" drivers will now face fines of £100 and three points on their driving licence.

I wouldn't even dare reversing a few hundred yards (to a slip road) down a hard shoulder, even in those circumstances... and even if dozens of others looked like they were "getting away with it"!

The only safe way of going back is if organised and controlled by the authorities... which I have seen done on the other side, but not directly involved.

Glad to see they'll be getting more than a "safety lecture" and a ticking off!

happened to me on the M58 a few weeks ago.

accident further up, us stuck 300 yards before the next junction in the middle lane.

loads of cars flying up hard shoulder and off at junction, then suddenly they all stopped.

as i crawled past, there was a police car parked further round the bend and had them all

Not as bad as turning around and going the wrong way... but still worthy of the same outcome though!

Yeah, great outcome that one boys.

I was caught up on the M5 earlier this year that, unfortunately, resulted in a fatal.

But I must give huge credit to the way the Highway Patrol guys turned about 7 miles of stuck traffic around to get us moving again. Big thumbs up to them.

Something that impressed me in France was how quickly the police close the motorway at a junction then proceeded to direct the traffic up the slip road (the wrong way) with all junctions manned by police, they then began turning the held up vehicles round and back to the same slip road.

OH was stuck on the M62 just before his junction after a 4 hour drive home. After an hour the police turned them all round and took them back up the previous slip road.

And I must confess now, that in the 1980's I turned onto the local motorway slip road, saw the standing traffic, then reversed back up (not very far though) and found another route. Now when I'm travelling that route I always look at the motorway traffic as I go round the roundabout, and odd times I have taken another route.

My car satnav has live traffic reports but nine times out of ten it waits until I have come up behind a queue of traffic before it announces there is a hold up ahead. This morning I was travelling down the A34 towards Winchester and came up behind a queue of very slow moving vehicles. After about 10 minutes of stop/start crawling along the satnav kindly advised me that there was a traffic hold up ahead, traffic moving at 20mph. Thanks, I thought...but 5mph would be more accurate

Ahh but Bob your sat nav expects you to know by now that its only news worthy when the A34 is running at a decent pace, it's running a close second to following the M25 as our biggest car park

I would agree with you on that one. They are talking about building some sort of tunnel at J9 of the M3/A34. I am not sure how that will work but it will be chaos while they build it.

My annoyance with my satnav is if it announced the hold up before I got onto the A34 approaching Winchester (when I can't get off again) I could use the minor roads to get round it.
