Asked my daughter for an idea on what to get her hubby for his birthday. She said get him a gift card for Zizzies as he likes eating there. Went in W.H.Smith and found one that could be used there. All you get is a credit card size card with the amount on it. Bit boring I thought, not even a little card to hold it in unless I wanted to buy one. Forget it I said. So he will be getting cash in his birthday card to spend anywhere he likes. Am I missing something with these gift cards that can only be used in specific places with no incentive or discount on what you pay for them.

Absolutely agree. What's the point.
I had two for my birthday.
What a faff, had to register them and hand over my E-mail address in order to get a voucher, which I then have to print off or keep on my phone. I can then only use them in the shop I have chosen within a specific time and no change is given.
I would love to know what %ge of gift cards never get claimed.
Why do people buy them?

Gift cards and even preloaded credit cards, are big earners, as many folk either forget about them, or in the case of prepaid credit cards there is often a small residual amount of money left on them, when the card has expired.

Same here woodman, happen to mention to my wife while we were in Halfords that I liked a hydroshot and at £130 was a good price as far as I knew. 2 weeks later on my birthday I got various amounts of gift cards for Halfords from my kids totaling £130, so I got the hydroshot from there. 2 weeks later in B&Q saw the hydroshot at £120. So proving the cash would have been far better.

The whole point is they make a shed load of money for the shops selling them. No other purpose whatsoever.

I used to buy my grandson a gift card so he didn’t drink the money. I knew he could get something useful for college with a gift card.

I'm a female poster who hates gift cards...
I've seen so many people lose money over the years when the cards expire, or the firm goes out of business, or else, as happened to me one birthday, they get gift cards for shops they wouldn't be seen dead in!
I'm going off the idea buying things or giving money altogether these days, as we all have so much STUFF, the kids have so many toys and the grown-ups can only use so many scented candles! I now try to give experiences... a nice meal out, or a trip somewhere, or membership of something useful, such as the RNLI or Stormforce (Kids' membership), the National Trust or the RSPB. That way the recipient enjoys the gift, it doesn't clutter their homes and lives, and even the charities gain from it. Win/win/win!
