The Goyt flows from above Whaley Bridge to New Mills and then on to Marple Bridge to meet the Mersey in Stockport. Stockport has a shopping centre built on top of the Mersey!

The canal that Toddbrook reservoir feeds flows pretty much the same way. There is a fantastic set of locks in Marple.

It's wonderful news that they are well on the way to reducing the water level.

The latest news is saying that a second Dam further up in Yorkshire is also having problems now and is having to be pumped out by the Yorkshire Fire service to lower its levels.

They have also had to evacuate several households who live nearby incase that one should breach as well.

Julia

Just seen this news story too , much smaller scale ( six houses ) and seems to have been sorted now

They're doing a great job of lowering the reservoir water level; I just wonder what effect that's had on neighbouring watercourses!

Sue.too, the sat nav obviously picked up data about the road closers, and instead of taking me on the A6 past New Mills and Whaley Bridge etc.

From North Manchester it took me down the M60 to Stockport and then up the A34 to Macclesfield and then onto the Cat & Fiddle to Buxton, took me 90 minutes as usual, and I got to my client in Buxton for 9am as normal.

The road out off Buxton to Whaley Bridge remains closed, no problem for me as I had to then go to Macclesfield to see my next client, but my client was saying that the rush hour traffic out off Buxton has been causing delays of around 2 hours.

Just got Wilmslow and Stockport clients to see, then I will be heading back home.

All dams that hold more than 25000 cubic metres above the natural ground level are under the permanent supervision of an engineer who must inspect the dam regularly,an inspection engineer must inspect and report on the condition of the dam at a minimum of 10 yearly intervals or less if the supervising engineer requests it.
