Its sad to read that the lady in Sheffield who was hit by a caravan that became detached from the car has died

Such sad news. This accident happened very close to where I live.

Sad indeed. And not just for the lady but also for the person who did the hitching up. I know nothing about this job, but I have friends hurt in an accident caused by a trailer of scrap metal coming unhitched & hitting other vehicles. After that accident, the driver was prosecuted.
More than one family affected by this tragic caravan accident.

It's impossible for the towball to break off as it is manufactured by means of drop forging. This process unsures that the grain is maintained throughout the component so it won't break under due stress exactly the same way as a lifting hook is made which the SWL is applied (Safe Working Load). If the towball was machined then the grain running through would be demolished and not fit for purpose. You need to have an engineer background and studied the science behind the engineering applications to understand how and why components are manufactured in different ways.

As it was a death there will be an investigation. Shouldn’t be hard to ascertain cause whether mechanical failure or operator error at time of hitching up. Ie somehow managing to sit the hitch on top of the ball instead of properly hitching. Usually the case when caravan detaches soon after driver moves off.

Depends on age & state of caravan. Plenty will buy an old caravan off eBay & believe they can just go off in it with no thought of maintenance & no knowledge of towing.
