I don't understand fashion either.
As far as I am concerned it was damaged when it was purchased and should have been taken back to the shop.
Why anyone would buy clothes that have holes in them is beyond me.

So let me get this straight...they make clothes with holes in and then glue bits of cloth over the holes? Why don't they just make them without holes in the first place?

It takes me too long to put a photo on here as I have to look up the instructions every time. There are 2 holes in the sleeve forearms, about 6x3" with pieces of fabric under them. Now let's forget this, please? Have a look on Amazon or Ebay, I bet there are some.

Not that many! mainly the lower sleeves, but the holes are "filled in" on the inside with said pieces of denim which detached, but you have the idea there. You can see the frayed edges.
