This was featured on rip off Britain yesterday morning,a phone call saying your prime account will be cancelled unless you press 1 and speak to our adviser.
This morning while I was showering the phone rang the wife answered it was the Amazon Prime people saying my Prime account would be cancelled, she put the phone down and went to switch the tv off and the scam was being shown again on Rip Off Britain explaining how many people had been caught out.
I did have Prime before Xmas but got an offer of 1 week for 99p,I needed an item from Amazon with £2.99 postage Prime saved me £2 and I got it the next day.
DS has prime - I don't - and he's been contacted. As it happened he was out and this came through on the landline. I just put the phone down but we'd all been warned through the rural neighbourhood watch/police alerts some three weeks ago. Really nasty scam.

Over the last 2/3 months, I've had a few of these calls but all slightly different - all have said "...your account will be automatically renewed.... If you wish to cancel, press 1 ...."
I've never had Prime....

If you don’t recognise the number..........DONT ANSWER IT!
If it is important, they will leave a message.
Bang-on Mike, that's my tactics. Family and friends know I do this, so they always speak when the answering machine cuts in as they know that if I'm there I will pick up. As for numbers that come up as "unavailable", well if they are unavailable, so am I.
Unfortunately there are so many gullible people around many of a certain age,I do feel sorry for them. But if they have family why don't they say something, my sister in law was very nearly scammed and we had to threaten her not to press 1 or whatever,if she had any doubt to contact us.She was involved in a Dyson scam where the m/c was serviced and needed expensive parts.
Before Xmas there was a very interesting programme on Channel 5 about scams and how to stay safe. I don't know if it can be caught up but it explains how easy it is to change the area code so you believe it is an English area code but in fact it's from India.
Sadly these days it's all too easy to fake telephone numbers. Some are legitimate, such as when a company moves to a different area and wants to keep their number, but many are just scams. It's why I will not answer my phone directly unless I recognise the number. All my family's and close friends names come up in my caller display but if they call from a number I won't know, they always speak.
Anyone else who wants to contact me will have to write if it's that important.
It's not just the area code that can be changed to show whatever number you want it to show.
With modern telephone systems its exactly like emails, you can set the system to show whatever email addresses or telephone numbers you want.
One program showed a man on a laptop sending a message (just as easy a phone call) pretending to be from the mother of the recipient... him moble stored the message in with those from his mother.
The scammers are sending texts and phoning people pretending to from friends and especially from their banks.
They tell you if you ever receive a call from a bank etc put the phone down and call them back on another phone not on the same system..ie if the phone your home number phone them on your mobile using a contact number you already have...if they have called you on your mobile then phone them using your landline again using a contact number you already have not one they tell you.
Report the phone number to https://scam-numbers.co.uk Ive had this call several times now its not good, bet loads of people have been caught out by it.
