Heading to Iceland in March and we are planning to rent a car. Can anyone recommend a rental company. All the local companies seem to get varying reviews so choosing is proving difficult. We want a 4x4 capable car. Thanks
Can't help with car rental, but I agree you'll probably need a 4x4 in March. We went there a few years ago in June. Amazing place! So different to anywhere I had ever been before. Strange not having any real darkness when we went, it just got sort of dusk around 12:30am then the sun was out again by 2am. If you want to get up to the north, probably the best way would be an internal flight. That's what we did.
We are very excited, only a month to go. Unfortunately we don't have time to visit the north. We have accommodation booked in Vik to explore the south. If we are lucky we might get to see the northern lights
Good luck, hope you get to see them that's something I've always wanted to do. Iceland is an incredible place even if you don't get to see the lights. We were told that in Reykjavik the roads and pavements are heated using geothermal energy so there is never any ice on them.
The scenery does look amazing. I would rather have dry weather for photography than see the lights, but to see them would be a massive bonus. We are spending half our time in vik and the other days in Reykjavik so hopefully we will experience plenty of nature and culture. Looking forward to visiting the Laugarvatn Fontana geothermal spa as well. Just need to get the car sorted.
we spent a month there a couple of years back...and its VERY expensive...for everything !!!
Take some dried foods with you...pasta / thermos flask ...tea bags / coffee../ make sandwiches to take with you as snacks cost a fortune for those days on etc road....You will need it..so much to see and big distances between places....We did over a thousand miles in the first week !!!!
Make a beeline to GULFOSS water falls ... and if its cold enough you maybe lucky to see the entire falls frozen....Great cafe / visitor centre...The lamb soup is great and although its very expensive...its an eat as much as you want dish.....
If you want to nut any alcohol in Iceland they buy it at the airport duty free on the way into the country ( wierd set up ) as the cost of alcohol in bars and supermarkets will make to covert to being tee total !!
ill dig out the details of the hire com' we used...we had an auto rav 4 which was very capable...
Definitely agree with Moorlander, it is VERY expensive there. Worth it though, and Gulfoss was amazing when we went there. Not frozen when we went as it was mid-summer. Try to get to see the Geysers and bubbling mud pools, but you may need a peg on your nose because of the smell of sulphur (bad eggs). The Blue Lagoon is great too.
We didn't hire a car, but went on coach trips of which there were many and fairly reasonable. The guides were very knowledgeable. The other trip we did was an internal flight to the north to see lake Myvatn. Beautiful! We flew over the glaciers.
We went in March/April a few years ago - cold but good time to go as everything ( incl. Restaurant food) about 1/3rd cheaper than going in summer and really quiet, we were the only people at one point in an enormous hotel!
We got a 'package' with icelandic air it included flights, vouchers for 3 different hotels, hire car and a suggested itinerary. I would recommend going to the local community swimming pools too - good way to mix with the locals and often in beautiful locations.
Thank you for the replies. We know it will be expensive but the trip will be worth it. Definately packing tea bags, rice, pasta and our thermos flasks. All the water falls on the south coast are on the hit list. Staying in vik will also mean we can visit diamond beach which looks amazing. Its only 2hrs away from vik. Just need to fit in all the walking gear, tripod and camera gear!
