For the past few months now we have been having problem's ,poor starting (warm or cold weather) and the main problem if we go over 2500 revs whilst driving the engine cuts out completely. It does start again after a min or two.
We have now taken it to 2 different garages without any success ,they don't know what the problem is ,so we have just gone along with them clutching at straws and had different job's done and non have solved the issues.
We've had new injectors, fuel rail pressure sensor, fuel rail pressure relief limiter valve.
I was hoping if any of you good folk had experienced the same problem's you may be able to advise, the problem is so much more profound for us now because of the current situation ,as like thousands of other people other half is self employed so we have no income to afford to carry on the guessing game.
It is an unfortunate fact of life that as cars get older finding faults can become very tricky.
All your issues could be down to something very simple like a frayed wire on a wiring loom (as it was with a friend's X type who was charged hundreds for new injectors when all it needed was £20 at an autoelectrician).
Throwing parts at the issue is rarely the solution, it needs time with a proper mechanic who is methodical in their approach going from fuel tank to engine looking for issues,
If garages don't know what the problem is they would be better telling you this, rather than simply fitting expensive parts.
If there are owners websites use them to try and get some clues.
white smoke on start up? has anyone looked at the fuel pump or that fuel tank end? we had this issue with our car for years, eventually we had to replace a fuel pipe which involved removing the tank and found the cause of all our issues, it was letting in air just where the pipe comes out of the tank
Has anyone put a diagnostic tester on it? A diagnostic tester should show up any fault codes.
Does it cut out at 2500 rpm even when standing still? If so it sounds like its going into limp-mode, which would suggest a problem with the ECU. It really needs plugging in to a diagnostic tester, as Daveyjp says, throwing parts at these "modern" cars rarely works and it could be something simple.
You can buy cheap diagnostic testers, I have one that cost me about £10. These will show up a fault code, although usually just a generic one, but this will give you a clue where to begin. Proper garage testers cost many times more but give you a detailed insight into the problem.
I think the 2500rpm thing is when the turbo kicks in, to do that it shifts the mapping to allow more fuel, but in what could be your case if the fuel pipes are drawing air it will end up just drawing more air in hence why it cuts out and then will restart after a couple of mins when the fuel has chance to be pumped back into the pipework
I once had a nissan truck that kept cutting out for no reason, then would start up again. The garage had everything in bits and changed all sorts. Then just by chance someone mentioned a filter halfway down the chassis body, that no-one else seemed to know about. It was semi-clogged. Changed it, and no more problems.
Thankyou all very much for your info.
Colin21 yes it was put on a diagnostics but unfortunately nothing came up.
Mick S we did wonder about changing the fuel filter ourselves,we assumed it had been done last year when it was serviced but we had a fuel leak on it and another garage found the seal hadn't been fitted to the filter housing ,so we are questioning now if a new one was actually fitted.
Mine was a secondary filter. Maybe even put in aftermarket? I think you would be able to tell whether a filter was new/old/clogged just by looking at it. But if you say a seal was missing, you know it had at least been off. So my guess is it was changed. Theres nothing at all worse than an intermittent fault. Far better to break down altogether.
EGR unit/valve - I had what sounds like the same/similar problem, didnt happen everytime but was scary when did as i lost power and a couple of times an engine cutout. One time it happened and wouldnt restart called the RAC out who i had joined he used his bag of tricks asked what had been tried then he unplugged the EGR and it started and ran perfectly, got my local garage to order and fit a new one and been fine since
Agree with Marg6 could well be turbo related I was suggest its a leaky/cracked turbo pipe. Also as Mick s says fuel filter sometimes they may not look dirty so may have not been changed or even it may have been changed but is faulty from manufactuer causing a slight blockage. Have you changed fuel brand recently if so it could be as simple as that.
------------- its our imperfections that makes us perfect
I don’t know if this helps but a general rule is: white smoke thru exhaust - water in the engine, blue smoke - oil, black smoke - diesel!
If you do experience white smoke on start up it would suggest to me that the cylinder head gasket has failed but what do I know! I haven’t seen your vehicle so good luck and hopefully it’s something simple. Don’t go throwing money at it tho. Find a good diagnostic mechanic.
