Tried yo tax my car but not allowed to do it online/ by phone because my MOT runs out before the end of the month. I can’t get an MOT because garages are closed, and motorists given a 6 month MOT period to get MOT done after shutdown.
So I will have no MOT, which is OK , but no TAX.
Anybody else got the same problem?

If you are doing nothing for the next three months you could try ringing Swansea and asking them, but that may not be long enough to get any sense out of them.
Several years ago I bought a motorbike which had 12 months tax on it. A year later I tried to SORN it, but couldn`t as they had sent me a V5 which wasn`t recognised by their computer. Couldn`t SORN it online, couldn`t SORN it at the Post Office and spent literally days on the phone to Swansea (automated answering), when you pressed the correct numbers to progress, you eventually got back to the start (after about 20-odd minutes) and so it went on..... Eventually I got fed up and starting pressing options numbers at random just for the sheer hell of it and got through to a person!! Who couldn`t help as my V5 number wasn`t recognised and they couldn`t help. Shortly afterwards I received notification of a fine as I had neither taxed nor SORNed it. Took a further 4 months to get it sorted and got a letter of apology and a refund of my fine, along with a promise that the situation would be resolved `as a priority`.
Guess what happened in 12 months time.................
Sorry for the long ramble, this furlough jobbie is getting to us!
Best of luck sorting it out, I can only recommend that you keep copies of all e-mails, letters etc and try to record any conversations, if it`s not resolved straight away you may need them.

Surly that allows you to invoke “force majeure” until things get back to normality.

Phone DVLA - I got through at the beginning of last week within 10 minutes. Admittedly, my issue was about not getting a MOT before deadline because our garage test centres were shut way before main shutdown (Covid 19 case on 5 March) and no non-essential travel off island. SORNed the car and advised insurance co.
Speak to DVLA and advise your insurance co. to avoid any comebacks about not having tax whilst DVLA sort it out.

I tax my car by quarterly direct debit. Costs a couple of quid more but I don't even have to think about it as it renews automatically each year. I usually MOT the car in January, one month prior to when the MOT actually expires, and the tax is renewed in February shortly after the MOT has been renewed.

I always tax a new to me car for 6 months first time if needed to separate MOT and tax dates etc. They often end up same time if always taxed for 12 months.
That eases the problem.
