Finally sorted FTTP (fibre to the premises) with Aquiss. Not the cheapest, and you have to supply your own router, but no phone line required.

No phone line required with Virgin cable either if you can get it. We've had it for years. Now getting 200 speed too, as they gave us a free upgrade when they replaced our faulty modem.

You will need a connection to the house whoever the provider is so you can get broadband.

FTTP refers to a fibre optic connection which will allow greater data transmission and reception speeds.

If the service comes from BT or via the likes of TalkTalk, Sky and others who deliver their services since de-regulation over the BT infrastructure they will want to install a telephone point in your house as their means of connection to your property. This doesn’t mean you have to have a telephone / landline from them. It is merely their terminology for the connection between their network and your house.

It is very likely that the last bit of connection to your house will be via copper wire (ie a traditional telephone connection). To my knowledge only VirginMedia actually deliver fibre to the house and if you aren’t in an area they serve bad luck.

Hope that clarifies it for you. If not just ask.

Just to be clear, Virgin don't use fibre to the house in most areas. They use fibre to feed their street cabinets then a coaxial cable from there to the house for TV/internet. There is a copper wire pair twisted round the coaxial cable to provide phone connection.

All very twee, anyone needing decent broadband will be going with StarLink next year, it will leave terrestrial broadband in the dark ages.

Basically poor folk will have to make do with terrestrial broadband, whilst those with a bit of coin will be opting for StarLink, simples really.

Putting the contradictions of those statements aside, myself & a lot of folk have got already got decent broadband.   For many people it's likely to be an unnecessary upgrade for a good while yet.

It's not just about broadband spiritburner, where I live, I can't even get a mobile phone signal, and that's just 15 miles North of Manchester, terrrestrial delivered services are fine for folk that live in the larger conabations and cities, and StarLink are not interested in that business as they will not have the capacity in the short term, it's folk like me that they are interested in, and will gladly give them my money, as internet here is also shocking.

Although looking out of my bedroom window, at the sheep and horses frollicking in the fields directly behind my house, is a small price to pay for having no mobile signal and crap internet, thankfully Starlink will let me have the best of both worlds, albiet at a price.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot, StarLink will also let me receive my local TV and Radio whilst I am down at the campsite in Frejus, that also has no mobile phone signal or wi-fi at the pitch, all I have to add is a SlingBox, and 10” antenna instead of having to use a 1m satellite dish, try doing that with virgin or plusnet etc.

StarLink is going to be very popular for those Brits with RV’s etc who venture over to Southern Europe that’s for sure, not to mention all the expats living abroad.

They do in this area because it was originally put in by a company called CableTel. They were taken over by NTL, who were taken over by Virgin, so we've had fibre to the house for at least 15 years. I can't remember when it first went in as we have been here 28 years.

You did indeed. To be honest I don't know what percentage of Virgin installations use fibre to the house, but considering the speeds they offer it must be quite high. Not everywhere can get Virgin at all though.

We are lucky here, being in a village 2-3 miles from the nearest town. Nobody else comes anywhere near Virgin's speeds in this area, we get 200mbs, and we could get faster if we wanted it. That's perfectly sufficient for us though.
